LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Column was disappointing

Your article (June 13 column “No tip of the cap to Oregon State’s baseball fans”) is so disappointing. Luke Heimlich was adjudicated for this charge, sentenced and served the assigned incarceration and probation.

You talked about second chances in your article but then go on to exclude Luke, and all sex offenders for that matter. His professional baseball career may never occur but teams want to win and avoiding Luke when there are lots and lots of unsavory characters in professional sports seems hypocritical.

As for the fans of Oregon State, they believe that Luke deserves a second chance. And please remember the data show that there are convicted sex offenders in your extended family, church, schools, work and social groups. Be careful throwing those stones.

And one last point you failed to mention, the recidivism rate for SO’s is 3.0 percent for another related crime within five years of release. Lower than any other felony group except murders. If you write on this issue again, do your homework instead of regurgitating myths and fear.
