BATON ROUGE — Zach Watson’s skills roaming the outfield for the LSU Tigers were so impressive this season that his leather glove is now made of gold.
LSU’s star centerfielder was named to the 2018 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team for Division I on Wednesday. Watson posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage during the 2018 season, as he also recorded six outfield assists.
Watson becomes the fourth Tiger player to receive a Gold Glove following catcher Micah Gibbs (2009), shortstop Alex Bregman (2015) and outfielder Andrew Stevenson (2015).
Ruston, who batted .308 with seven home runs and 34 RBI, will soon play this summer under LSU coach Paul Mainieri with the USA Collegiate Nationals Team.
The other members of the 2018 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team for Division I are catcher Shea Langeliers (Baylor), first baseman Jake Vieth (Gonzaga), second baseman Michael Massey (Illinois), third baseman Brandon Perez (Southern California), shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson (Houston Baptist), pitcher Joe DeMers of Washington, outfielder Brandon Lockridge (Troy) and outfielder Jake Mangum (Mississippi State).
Watson was the only player for a Louisiana college to earn recognition on any of the teams but UL Lafayette second baseman Hunter Kasuls was a finalist for the award.
Kasuls had only one error in 260 opportunities while recording 166 assists, 93 putouts and helped turn 36 double plays for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
