New Iberia Senior High linebacker Ja’Braylon Spencer (42) wraps up a St. Martinville running back during last season’s game at NISH. Spencer gave a verbal commitment to play college football at UL Lafayette Sunday.

LAFAYETTE — The UL Lafayette football team picked up four more recruits for the 2019 signing class this past week, including New Iberia Senior High outside linebacker Ja’Braylon Spencer who pledged to the Cajuns on Sunday.
For the NISH star, one of the factors to pledging his commitment to the Ragin’ Cajuns was the emphasis of recruiting in-state talent by new head coach Billy Napier and his staff.
The Ragin’ Cajuns now have 16 commitments for the 2019 class with 12 of them residing in the the state of Louisiana.
“It made a big difference,” said Spencer, who averaged eight tackles per game in 2017. “Coach Napier said we’re trying to build a team around with local guys, guys who will have pride playing here.
“I take a lot of pride being able to say that I’ll be a Cajun. I’m from New Iberia right down the road, so the support will always be there.”
Spencer (6-foot-3, 200 lbs.), who is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, also had offers from Arkansas State, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Northwestern State, Nicholls State, and Southeast Missouri State.
The Cajuns offered Spencer back in May, but had been recruiting him for at least a year before then under former head coach Mark Hudpseth.
The new coaching staff though sealed the deal as the Cajuns quickly became the perfect fit for the Yellow Jackets defensive star.
“I believed they were where I wanted to be because they showed me so much love since early in my sophomore year,” Spencer said. “Coach (Michael) Desormeaux was on me heavy and then Coach Napier came in and Coach Des stayed with me. Then I met coach Napier and he came even stronger.
“They showed me a family environment and a lot has changed within a couple months there and I want to be apart of something that will be very special to Lafayette, Louisiana.”
Spencer was the third of four commitments the Cajuns picked up this week.
Southern Lab outside linebacker Tyler Guidry (6-foot-2, 220 lbs.) announced late Sunday night his pledge to the Ragin’ Cajuns on Twitter, West Monroe defensive lineman Dalvin Hutchinson (6-foot-1, 320 lbs.) announced his pledge on Twitter earlier Sunday, while North DeSoto athlete Aubrey Scott (5-foot-10, 165 lbs.) made a similar pledge on Wednesday.
All three players are also rated as three-star recruit by 247Sports.
This weekend’s commitments give the Cajuns now 14 three-star prospects for the 2019 signing class, and now have the No. 51 rated class in the country by 247Sports.
