Boy, 4, hit by car on La. 14; dies

ST. MARTINVILLE — A 36-year-old New Iberia man was shot to death and another New Iberian wounded Saturday night while they were in a vehicle on the 7300 block of Louisiana 31 in St. Martinville, according to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Demarcus J. Fontenette, 36, and Rusty J. Allen, 39, were found in their vehicle after a passing motorist alerted the Sheriff’s Office via a 911 call about a vehicle on the side of the highway, Maj. Ginny Higgins, SMPSO public information officer, said. Deputies responded to the report at 8:15 p.m., she said.

They found Fontenette, who had died from multiple gunshot wounds, and Allen, who also suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital by Acadian Ambulance, according to Higgins. 

As of Sunday afternoon Allen was listed in critical condition.

“The investigation is ongoing as to who the suspects are, if there was a motive and who is responsible for what occurred last night,” Higgins said.

“We are asking the public if they have any information to pass it on to assist in the investigation.”
