CATAHOULA — A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted for Mrs. Burton J. Bernis, the former Judy Derouen, 70, at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at St. Rita’s Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Fabre officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at the Dion Hall in Catahoula. The hall will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, until service time.
A native of New Iberia and resident of Catahoula, Mrs. Bernis passed away at 9:43 a.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at her residence.
Mrs. Bernis was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharisitc Minister. She was a very spiritual woman with strong faith. She was a member of the prayer group and Ambassadors for Christ. She also taught religion in Catahoula and Coteau Holmes. She also volunteered her time tutoring at Catahoula Elementary and St. Martinville Senior High.
Mrs. Judy loved spending time with her family, working in her flower beds and art.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Burton J. Bernis of Catahoula; three daughters Patricia Broussard and husband, Bryan “Flash,” of Catahoula, Juanita Dore and husband, Cliff, of Catahoula and Crystal Capritto and husband, Corey, of Cypress Island; eight grandchildren Colby Bourque, Chelsie B. Huval, Caleb Bourque, Shawn Dore, Brittany D. Benoit, Hope Dore, Cameron Capritto and Cicily Capritto; two great grandchildren Olyvia Bourque and Olivia Benoit; one sister Jean D. Poche and husband, Shelley Boudreaux, of Delcambre; and one brother Cagle Derouen and wife, Paula, of New Iberia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustave and Louise Trahan Derouen.
Pallbearers will be Caleb Bourque, Colby Bourque, Bryan Broussard, Corey Capritto, Cliff Dore and Shawn Dore.
