Panthers move up, SM gets votes

The Catholic High Panthers, fresh off of Friday’s 48-14 win over Westgate, moved up to third in the most recent Louisiana Sports Writers Association prep football polls that were released today.

CHS, which was tied with Welsh for fourth in the preseason polls last week, received 96 total points, to move into third as Welsh, which also won Friday, received 93 points to stay in fourth place in Class 2A.

Catholic High’s week four opponent, Notre Dame, moved from second to first on the strength of its 35-14 win over LaGrange. The Pios had 115 points and seven first place votes among the sports writers.

Many, which was third last week, moved up to second with 103 points and three first place votes.

The Panthers’ District 7-2A rival, Ascension Episcopal, received 18 votes in the poll.

St. Martinville Senior High, which was unranked last week and did not receive any votes, received two votes from the sports writers in the Class 4A poll and was tied with Bastrop after beating New Iberia Senior High 38-21 Thursday.

Edna Karr was first in Class 4A with 112 votes and nine first-place votes to stay atop the polls from last week.

Warren Easton stayed second with 104 points and St. Thomas More stayed third with 102 points. Northwood High of Shreveport got the only other first place vote in Class 4A and was fifth in the polls with 82 points.

In Class 5A, the top three places remaind unchanged from last week with John Curtis (three 1st place votes, 112 points), Zachary (6, 110) and West Monroe (1, 102).

In Class 3A,  University Lab (9, 119) and Sterlington (1, 110) stayed first and second in the polls with Jena (105) moving up to third from fourth after Kaplan (73) fell from third to fifth after losing to Acadiana 27-20 Friday.

In Class A, Kentwood (5, 109) moved into the top spot with Southern Lab (1, 100) in second after West St. John (2, 88) fell from first to fourth after falling to St. james 43-0 Friday.

District 7-A member  Lafayette Christian (1, 93) moved up from fourth to third with a win over Northside.
