Panthers third in 2A poll

- Catholic High School is ranked third in the Class 2A football polls by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The Catholic High School Panthers remained third in the latest Class 2A statewide high school football poll of members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, and for the first time this year the St. Martinville Tigers are receiving votes in the Class 4A poll.
Catholic High improved to 2-0 with a second straight win, beating Class 3A St. Louis Catholic 42-14 on Friday at Teurlings Catholic.
The Panthers have 105 points in the poll, trailing top-ranked Notre Dame (2-0) with 115 points and seven of 10 first-place votes and second-place Many (2-0) with 110 points and three of 10 first-place votes.
St. Martinville (2-0) had 2 points in the 4A poll after its second consecutive win over a Class 5A school, a 47-27 win over Lafayette.
Several district opponents of Teche Area teams are ranked or receiving votes this week.
Acadiana (2-0) moved up from ninth to seventh in the Class 5A poll after beating Ruston 28-21. Ruston had been tied for 10th with Scotlandville in the previous poll. Barbe (2-0) moved into the No. 10 spot after beating Riverside 44-0. Both Acadiana and Barbe play in District 3-5A, which also features New Iberia Senior High.
St. Thomas More (2-0) is third in the Class 4A poll and Teurlings Catholic (2-0) is ninth. Both teams play in District 4-4A with area team Westgate High School. STM beat Comeaux 70-13 on Friday and Teurlings beat LaGrange 29-12.
Kaplan (1-1) remained fifth in the Class 3A poll after beating welsh 18-7. The Pirates play in District 8-3A with the Teche Area’s Erath.
Ascension Episcopal (2-0), which plays in District 7-2A with local teams Catholic High, Loreauville, Delcambre, Jeanerette, West St. Mary and Franklin, is just outside the Top 10 in Class 2A with 22 points in the voting.
Lafayette Christian (2-0), which plays in District 7-A with area teams Highland Baptist, Hanson and Centerville, is ranked second in the Class A poll with 107 points. Vermilion Catholic (2-0)7, another 7-A squad, is No. 9.
John Curtis (2-0) remained No. 1 in the Class 5A poll with 119 points and nine first-place votes. West Monroe (2-0) is second with 107 points and one first place vote, followed by Destrehan (2-0), Catholic of Baton Rouge (2-0), East Ascension (2-0), Zachary (1-1), Acadiana, Live Oak (2-0), Scotlandville (2-0) and Barbe.
Karr (2-0) has nine first-place votes and 117 points to lead the 4A poll, which remained unchanged through the No. 8 spot this week.
Warren Easton (2-0) is second, followed by STM, Lakeshore (2-0), Northwood (2-0 with 1 first-place vote), Plaquemine (2-0), Leesville (2-0) and North DeSoto (2-0). Teurlings moved up a spot from 10th to ninth and Neville (1-1) moved into the No. 10 spot with Parkview Baptist (0-2) falling out of the top 10 with a loss to East Ascension.
University Lab (2-0) leads the 3A poll with nine first place votes and 119 total points. The top five spots unchanged in the listings with Sterlington (2-0, 1 first place vote) second, followed by Jena (2-0), Church Point (2-0) and Kaplan. St. James (2-0) moved up a spot to sixth, followed by Northwest (2-0), Union Parish (2-0), De La Salle (1-1) and Loyola Prep (2-0).
Notre Dame, Many and Catholic High were followed in the 2A poll by Amite (1-1), Dunham (2-0), Welsh (1-1), Kinder (2-0), Rosepine (2-0) and Country Day (2-0).
Kentwood (2-0) leads the Class A poll with 111 total points and six first-place votes. LCA had two first-place votes, with West St. John (1-1, 1 first-place vote) and Southern Lab (1-1) tied for third. Haynesville (2-0, 1 first-place vote) is fifth, folowed by Logansport (2-0), Ascension Catholic (2-0), VC and Basile (1-1).
