T-shirts that symbolized the leader in them, as the lyrics of the song “All I do is win, win, win, no matter what” pumped through the speakers as they found their places among the grandparents they assembled to honor.

“Today’s event is to honor the grandparents of our students,” 5th grade English Language Arts Teacher Britni Brown said. “This is our first year that we were able to get as many parents as we have today and this is the biggest event that we have had with grandparents.”

Students took to the stage with skits that mimicked ‘The Newlywed Game’ in an effort to show how well they knew their grandparents. They also held letters that spelled out the word grandparent with a compliment for each letter represented to those in attendance. Several other students decided to give personal accounts of what their grandparents meant to them.

“I told everybody how me and my parrain watch games together,” 5th grader Javar Pittman said about his grandfather Chris Cormier.

“Today was kind of embarrassing because my nanny videos me and I don’t like being videoed on stage,” 5th grader Kimber Friou said. “But I’m glad she came and it was fun.”

The students also shared with their grandparents how they have helped them live the seven habits of tiger cub leaders (the school’s mascot). They included sharpen the saw, synergize, seek first to understand, then to be understood, think win-win, put first things first, begin with the end in mind, and be proactive.

“They are awesome,” Kathleen Domond said. “It makes us feel very special after all we are the grandparents. Sometimes we feel like we are behind the parents but the kids make us feel like we are on top the parents.”

She was one of about 100 grandparents that filled the gym for Wednesday’s assembly.

“Everything is student led from the emcee to the presentations,” Brown said.

“I’m enjoying it and the students are well behaved everyone is sitting so quiet,” Sheryl Latiolais said.
