HAMMOND — The Catholic High School Panthers scored touchdowns on all nine of their possessions to roll to a 63-7 win over the St. Thomas Aquinas Falcons Friday night and remain unbeaten heading into a showdown with Notre Dame.
The Panthers’ shortest drive was 26 yards with the next shortest covering 47 yards. All others were 57 yards or longer.
CHS (3-0) gashed the Falcons (1-2) for 396 yards on the ground, led by Zoe Cormier’s 96 yards on eight totes. K.K. Reno added 84 yards on four carries and Peter LeBlanc had 72 yards on only two runs. Cormier, quarterback Trey Amos (5-47), LeBlanc, Reno, Layne Lipari and William Regard each had a rushing touchdown.
LeBlanc also had three receptions for 64 yards with two TD catches and Cormier had one catch for 42 yards and a touchdown. Amos completed four of five passes for 106 yards.
Catholic High led 21-0 after one quarter, 42-0 at halftime and added 7 points in the third and 14 in the fourth. STA averted the shutout with a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Panthers held the Falcons to 183 total yards while compiling 502 yards on offense.
Antron Dillon led STA (1-2) with 111 yards and a touchdown rushing.
CHS, ranked third in the latest Class 2A poll conducted by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, plays host to No. 1 Notre Dame (3-0) on Friday. The Panthers beat the Pios in the Division III state championship game in December after Notre Dame had won a home game with CHS earlier in the season.
Welsh 55, Loreauville 6
WELSH — Jaheim Simon rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help defending Class 2A state champion Welsh (2-1) beat Loreauville in a non-district game Friday night.
Jerome Hebert added 110 yards on eight carries with a touchdown and Landin Broussard ran for 54 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Austyn Benoit completed nine of 11 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, one to Dylan Degeyter and the other to Da’ren Zeno.
Welsh is ranked seventh in the most recent Class 2A poll by the LSWA.
Loreauville (0-3) opens District 7-2A play Friday at home against Jeanerette.
Grand Lake 31, Highland Baptist 8
LAKE CHARLES — Logan Granger rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns and Jaren Sonnier ran for 104 yards and two TDs to lead Grand Lake to a non-district win over Highland Baptist on Friday.
Tanner Vicknair got the Bears (0-3) on the scoreboard with a 42-yard TD run in the third quarter with Hunter Thibodeaux scoring the 2-point conversion on a throw from Myles Liggans.
Liggans rushed for a team-high 55 yards and Vicknair ran for 46. Liggans also threw for 84 yards with Keelan Preston catching nine passes for 55 yards and Kylyn Jones and Derrick Wright each catching three.
Highland opens District 7-A play this week at No. 2 Lafayette Christian (3-0), the defending Division IV state champion.
Northwest 39, West St. Mary 12
OPELOUSAS — Northwest High piled up 305 yards while limiting West St. Mary to 170 in beating the Wolfpack Friday in a non-district game.
Montaze Sam had 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground and threw for 140 yards and three TDs for the Raiders (3-0), who are ranked seventh in the latest Class 3A poll.
The Wolfpack (0-3) got a pair of second-half touchdown runs, one in each quarter, but failed to convert the try for 2 each time.
WSM opens District 7-2A play Friday at rival Franklin in the annual Fire on the Bayou game.
Lafayette Christian 63, Franklin 0
LAFAYETTE — Second-ranked and defending Division IV state champion Lafayette Christian rolled to its third straight blowout win to start the season, piling up 200 yards on the ground and 242 in the air to beat Franklin in a non-district game Friday.
Quarterback Zachary Clement completed six of nine passes for 208 yards and five TDs, with Sage Ryan catching two for 93 yards and two TDs and Errol Rogers catching two for 79 and two touchdowns and Victor Dupre catching two for 49 and two touchdowns, one from Rogers on his only pass attempt of the game.
The Knights (3-0) led 28-0 after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime.
Franklin (0-3) plays host to West St. Mary (0-3) in the annual Fire on the Bayou game to open District 7-2A play Friday.
Vermilion Catholic 34, Erath 11
ERATH — The offensive stats were close though the score wasn’t as Vermilion Catholic, ranked No. 9 in the Class A polls, beat Vermilion Parish rival Erath in a non-district game Friday.
The Eagles (3-0) rushed for only 19 yards but threw for 267, and quarterback Drew Lege went 16-for-22 with four touchdown tosses. Ethan Lege had 167 yards and two TDs on five catches for VC.
Jax Thibodeaux rushed for a game-high 68 yards to pace the Bobcats (0-3). Luke LeBlanc completed 18 of 31 passes for 214 yards but was picked off twice.
Erath plays at Rayne on Friday in a non-district tilt.
