- Catholic High School's Alex Guilbeau was voted Defensive Player of the Week by fans of Teche Area football teams in an online poll at www.iberianet.com, sponsored by Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs.
Not only did Delcambre High quarterback Colt Dooley lead his team with 100 yards rushing against Centerville this past week, he also scored all 16 of his team’s points with two touchdowns and two 2-point conversion runs.
Those big numbers helped the senior grab the attention of Teche Area football fans in The Daily Iberian’s latest Player of the Week poll sponsored by the law firm of Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs. Dooley broke a Catholic High School stranglehold on Player of the Week voting, nabbing 40.9 percent of the vote on the poll at www.iberianet.com/sports to hold off CHS receiver Peter LeBlanc (36.6 percent) in the fan vote.
Westgate High receiver/running back Kayshon Boutte and Centerville running back Andrew Cuvillier also were nominated by fans for Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Catholic High defensive end Alex Guilbeau was voted Defensive Player of the Week, beating out Keith Lopez of Westgate, Xavier Armstrong of Centerville and Ja’Braylon Spencer of New Iberia in the voting.
LeBlanc had 153 total yards and three touchdowns on five touches for the Panthers, averaging more than 30 yards per touch.
Boutte rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown in a defensive struggle against New Iberia, netting the Westgate junior 13.6 percent of the fan vote.
Cuvillier rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for the Bulldogs in a tight 22-16 win over Delcambre and received 8.9 percent of the fan vote.
In the defensive voting, Guilbeau netted 45.4 percent of the vote after making 10 tackles with an interception.
Lopez had seven tackles, three for loss, with a quarterback pressure and caused a fumble that Westgate recovered, leading to the Tigers’ lone touchdown in a come-from-behind 7-3 win at NISH.
Armstrong had 10 tackles, nine solo, with one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery. He had 14.2 percent of the fan vote.
Spencer had eight tackles with three tackles for loss for the Yellow Jackets and netted 4.5 percent of the fan vote. NISH head coach Rick Hutson noted Spencer forced four holding penalties against WHS.
More than 4,200 votes were cast for the week and nearly 8,500 votes have been cast in the three weeks of the season so far.
