Jeanerette quarterback Noah Rollins fakes a handoff to Elton Alexander Jr. (4) during the Tigers' game at Loreauville High School Friday night.

In their third meeting in a year, the top-ranked Notre Dame Pioneers beat No. 2 Catholic High 49-0 Friday night at Panther Stadium in New Iberia.

It was a rematch of the 2017 Division III state championship game, won by Catholic High, 33-16. Notre Dame won the first meeting between the teams in 2017, 37-0.

Notre Dame 49, Catholic High 0

Noah Bourgeois rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns, including a 72 yard run on the first play of the game, and Notre Dame scored 28 first-quarter points in beating Catholic High Friday in a non-district game that was a matchup of the top two teams in the most recent Class 2A Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll.

Quarterback Ben Broussard rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns and the Pioneers (4-0) scored on every possession of the first half in building a 42-0 halftime lead over the Panthers (3-1).

It was the first time since losing 37-0 to Notre Dame last season that the Panthers were held scoreless in a game. Friday’s game was called with 8:36 left in the fourth quarter due to lightning.

Trey Henry led CHS with 83 yards rushing.

The Panthers open District 7-2A play Thursday at Jeanerette.

Acadiana 27, New Iberia 7

Special teams and defense kept New Iberia in the game against fifth-ranked Acadiana in the District 3-5A opener for both teams Friday at NISH, but the Yellow Jackets were only able to muster one scoring drive.

On special teams the Jackets (0-4 overall, 0-1 district) blocked an extra point, averaged better than 31 yards on nine punts, forced a 4-yard punt with heavy pressure that set up their touchdown and averaged 17.5 yards a return on kickoffs, including a 26-yarder and a 27-yarder by J’lon Ozenne.

NISH also won the turnover battle 4-1 with Kylyend Lee recovering a pair of fumbles, Quintin Cook also recovering a fumble and William Black intercepting a pass.

But the Wrecking Rams (4-0, 1-0) finally got their running game going to finish with 312 yards on the ground, with 177 coming in the second half. The Rams scored a touchdown in each quarter on a one-yard carry by Dillon Monette in the first quarter, a 25-yard run by Jeremiah Brooks in the second quarter, a 49-yard run by Larryll Greene in the third and a 19-yard run by Greene in the fourth.

Monette led AHS with 111 yards on 20 carries. Brooks had 96 on 16 runs and Greene added 92 on only seven rushes.

Chavis Archangel led the Yellow Jackets with 55 yards on nine carries. Cameron Blake caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Michael Akins on a third-and-17 play in the second quarter on a deflection in the end zone.

NISH continues district play at LaGrange on Friday.

Captain Shreve 36, Westgate 24

Captain Shreve junior running backs D.J. Fleming and LaDerrien Frierson combined for 328 yards rushing and five total touchdowns as the Gators stayed undefeated with a non-ditrict win at Westgate Friday evening.

The Gators stuck first on a 76-yard burst by Fleming on the second play from scrimmage.

Westgate answered on its first possession with a 72-yard drive that consumed almost the entire first quarter. The Tigers (2-2) were going to settle for a 23-yard field goal, but a roughing the kicker call gave WHS a fresh set of downs near the goal-line, which enabled quarterback Darien Charles to hook up with junior wide receiver Makholven Sonn for a six-yard touchdown pass on third down.

The Gators appeared to be on the verge of breaking the game open in the second quarter with a 23-7 lead, but Westgate was able to cut into the deficit with a 40-yard field goal by Connor Scott with 2:37 remaining in the first half.

A one-yard run by Kayshon Boutte, who was lined up at halfback in the wishbone formation, brought the Tigers to within 23-17 at the 6:59 mark of the third quarter.

Charles, who began the game 5-of-5 through the air, set up the Boutte touchdown run with a 32-yard jaunt to the Captain Shreve 5-yard line. The senior quarterback left the game, however, after taking a hard hit near midfield with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.

Willie Strickney connected with Boutte on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to cut the Shreve lead to 29-24. Westgate had one more opportunity to forge ahead, but the Tigers were backed up on their own one-yard line and turned the ball over.

Westgate (2-2) travels to Patterson for a non-district game Friday.
