SMSH nearly in Top 10; Catholic High falls to 7

Catholic High School’s 49-0 loss to top-ranked Notre Dame solidified the Pios’ hold on the No. 1 spot in the most recent Class 2A statewide poll of a panel of Louisiana Sports Writers Association members and knocked the Panthers from the No. 2 spot last week to No. 7 this week.

St. Martinville (4-0) received a big boost in the Class 4A voting after a 48-6 win over Northside, moving up to one spot under the Top 10. 

CHS (3-1) narrowly trailed No. 6 Country Day (4-0) in the poll with 65 points to the Saints’ 69 points. Notre Dame had nine of 10 first-place votes and 119 total points, an increase of 13 points from the previous week’s poll. Amite moved up from a tie for third to second, with Dunham remaining third, Many moving up a spot from fifth, Newman moving up from sixth to fifth and Country Day climbing from ninth. Many has the other first-place vote. Rosepine (4-0), Welsh (2-2) and Ascension Episcopal (4-0) round out the Top 10, with AES a District 7-2A rival of CHS and Teche Area teams Loreauville, Jeanerette, Delcambre, West St. Mary and Franklin.

In 4A voting, SMSH had 18 points, with North DeSoto (3-1) 10th in the 4A poll with 33 points. The Tigers had four points the previous week after three straight wins over Class 5A opponents.

Several district rivals of Teche Area teams were in the polls again this week.

Acadiana (4-0) remained fifth in Class 5A after a 27-7 win over New Iberia Senior High and Barbe (4-0), another District 3-5A team, moved up a spot from ninth to eighth after a 42-21 district win over Lafayette. Sam Houston, also in District 3-5A, had 4 points in the poll after a 28-19 win over district rival Sulphur.

St. Thomas More (3-1) fell from fifth to third after a 52-43 loss to Catholic High of Baton Rouge (3-1, sixth in Class 5A)and Teurlings Catholic (2-2) fell in the voting after a 42-3 loss to Archbishop Rummel. Both teams are members of District 4-4A along with Westgate High. STM had 85 points to trail No. 4 Northwood by 3 points, while Teurlings had 9 points in the voting after receiving 15 the previous week. Rayne (1-3), also a member of District 4-4A, has 1 point in the most recent poll after having 4 the previous week.

In Class 3A, Kaplan (2-2) climbed from seventh to fifth after a 39-9 win over Kinder. Kaplan plays in District 8-3A, as does Teche Area squad Erath.

In Class A, Lafayette Christian (4-0) remains second in the most recent poll with 102 points and Vermilion Catholic (4-0) remains ninth with 47 points. Both teams play in District 7-A, which features Teche Area teams Highland Baptist, Hanson and Centerville.

John Curtis (4-0) is No. 1 in the Class 5A poll with nine of 10 first-place votes and 119 total points. West Monroe (4-0) is second with the remaining first-place vote and 99 points. East Ascension (4-0), Zachary (3-1), Acadiana, Catholic of Baton Rouge, Destrehan (3-1), Barbe, John Ehret (3-1) and Live Oak (3-1) round out the Top 10.

Karr is No. 1 in Class 4A with nine first-place votes and 117 total points. Warren Easton is second with 107 points, followed by Lakeshore (4-0), Northwood (4-0) with the remaining first-place vote, STM, Leesville (4-0), Neville (3-1), Plaquemine (3-1), Bastrop (4-0) and North DeSoto (3-1).

University Lab School (4-0) is the unanimous No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Jena (4-0), Church Point (4-0), Sterlington (3-1), Kaplan, Iota (4-0), St. James (3-1), Northwest (3-1), Union Parish (3-1) and Archbishop Hannan (4-0).

Kentwood (4-0) leads the Class A poll with 116 points and nine first-place votes. The Kangaroos are followed by LCA, Southern Lab (3-1), Haynesville (4-0), Oak Grove (4-0), Logansport (4-0) with the final first-place vote, West St. John (2-2), Ascension Catholic (4-0), VC and Covenant Christian (4-0).
