FRANKLIN — It started well for Hanson Friday night in the Tigers’ District 7-A football game with Gueydan.

Less than two minutes into the game, Kevin Garrette scored on a 29-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead after the missed PAT.
That would turn out to be the offensive highlight for HMS in a 27-6 loss to the Bears.
That long run accounted for just a little less than half of Hanson’s total offensive output. The Tigers finished with 30 yards rushing and 33 yards passing, and the end result was Hanson’s second straight district loss. The Tigers fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in district.
“We had one good drive early on and one good play and then we had no answer for the blitz,” Hanson coach Chris Sanders said. “Well, we had an answer and we did not execute it, at all.
“They kept going to the well and we had no answer. They were very physical. They were a lot bigger than we are and they trusted what they did on offense.”
What Gueydan did on offense was pound the ball. Behind tailback Mark Clark and fullback Lane Breaux, the Bears simply ran the ball right at the Hanson defense, grinding out yards, taking time off the clock and finishing drives for touchdowns.

The Bears also were opportunistic on defense. Cade Theriot had an interception return for a touchdown and the rest of the Gueydan defense harassed Hanson quarterback Stephen Rosamond all game long.
The result was Hanson’s lowest yardage output of the season and was the third time this year the Tigers have been held to a touchdown or less.
“We were on the field too much,” Sanders said. “Our defense was on the field too much.”
Three times the Bears went for it on fourth down and three times Gueydan came up with the yards needed for a first down. Gueydan also drew Hanson offsides on a fourth down play once to keep a drive alive.
The Tigers need to regroup quickly with second-ranked Lafayette Christian visiting Friday. The defending Division IV state champions are 5-0 on the season and easily took care of Central Catholic 48-0 Friday. LCA has not allowed a single point on defense this year.
“We don’t turn the page, we roughly keep the 24-hour rule,” Sanders said. “Tonight is all we think about until about this time tomorrow (Saturday) and then turn the page.
“We’re playing a team that a lot better than Gueydan next week. We’re playing what amounts to a very talented (Class) 3A team next week and we will set some micro goals that we can achieve and survive for hopefully a more competitive game the following week (against Highland Baptist).”
