Barbe 26, New Iberia 7
A 75-yard return of the opening kick by Cameron Blake set New Iberia up for a quick score and a 7-0 lead over the Bucs and were knotted at 7-all at halftime after Barbe pulled even on its second series.
The Yellow Jackets limited Barbe to 98 total yards in the first half, 38 on the ground.
But for the second straight week NISH lost its starting quarterback to injury on the first series of the second half when Blake went down on the third offensive snap of the third quarter, and New Iberia couldn’t put together much offensively from that point.
The defense, which was missing several starters including Taegan Bourque, the quarterback hurt the previous week, and linebacker JaBraylon Spencer, eventually gave up a 40-yard touchdown and a short TD pass in the third quarter, and a safety and a field goal in the fourth quarter accounted for the final points.
Barbe finished with 157 yards on the ground and 141 in the air. The Jackets ran for 76 yards but only attempted three passes, one of which resulted in a grounding penalty from the end zone and a safety.
Catholic High 68, Loreauville 8
Trey Amos accounted for six touchdowns, four rushing and two passing, and Evan Nguyen had 145 yards and two touchdowns rushing as Catholic High blew past Loreauville Friday in a District 7-2A game, to stay in first place in district, tied with Ascension Episcopal.
The Panthers scored on eight straight possession in the first half to build a 55-0 lead at the break over the Tigers (0-7, 0-3 district).
Amos rushed for 124 yards and scored on runs covering 17, 10, two and 21 yards. He completed four of five passes for 71 yards and touchdown passes of 28 and 13 yards to Peter LeBlanc, who finished with 71 yards receiving and 55 yards rushing for the Panthers (6-1, 3-0).
Catholic High’s defense came up with two interceptions by Nicholas Borne and held Loreauville to 89 yards of offense, 50 of which came on the last play of the game as Leslie Joseph scored on a long run to help LHS avoid the shutout.
CHS travels to Delcambre Friday. Loreauville travels to Ascension Episcopal.
West St. Mary 14, Jeanerette 8
West Saint Mary scored twice in the third quarter in a come-from-behind win at Jeanerette Friday evening.
The Wolfpack (2-5, 2-2) struggled to move the football in the first half as Jeanerette mounted a ferocious pass rush and double-teamed prolific WSM receiver Daylon Richard, but Druilhet improvised to connect with wide receiver Kobe Phillips for a pair of 30-yard scoring strikes.
Jeanerette took an 8-0 lead when senior running back Shonathon Sparrow reached the end zone on a three-yard run with 3:34 remaining in the second quarter.
Sparrow (19 carries, 91 yards) tacked on the 2-point conversion for the Tigers (2-5, 1-3).
