BATON ROUGE — LSU was aggressive on offense in Saturday’s 36-16 victory over Georgia, and the stat that documents that better than any other is the fact that the Tigers were 4-for-4 on fourth-down conversions.

“That was the message we were going to send,” LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said. “We were gonna to be as aggressive as we can. We were gonna take shots and go for it. Play to win the game the whole time.”

In the second quarter, LSU went for it on fourth-and-one at the goal line and quarterback Joe Burrow scored on a keeper. The Tigers’ very next drive featured two fourth-down conversions as Burrow rushed for one yard on a fourth-and-one play from LSU’s own 38-yard-line, and moments later at the Georgia 36-yard line when Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 16 yards.

The final conversion came in the third quarter with the ball at the Georgia 14-yard line as Burrow picked it up by rushing for two yards.

“They did a good job,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “They took some good risk at getting those at getting those conversions with sneaks and things like that. The key is you don’t want to be in fourth-and-one. It’s hard to stop those plays.”

Turning things over

Georgia entered Saturday’s game being one of the best teams in the country when it came to turnover margin.

The Bulldogs had a +6 turnover margin and had only three turnovers on the season and none of those three had resulted into points for the opposition. LSU’s defense on Saturday forced four turnovers by the Bulldogs and turned those into 13 points.

Leading the way for the Tigers were defensive backs John Battle and Kristian Fulton each hauling in an interception, while linebacker Devin White recovered a fumble forced by Grant Delpit, and Avery Atkins recovered a fumble forced by Ed Paris on a kickoff.

Dominant opening quarter

LSU shut out Georgia in the opening quarter Saturday, which extended its streak to 11 straight games that the Tigers’ defense has not allowed a first-quarter touchdown. The last time LSU allowed a first-quarter touchdown was against Alabama last season. Through seven games this season, the Tigers have now outscored their opponents 62-6 in the opening quarter.

Georgia, meanwhile, was shut out at the halftime for the first time since a Nov. 12, 2016, in a come-from-behind 13-7 victory over Auburn.

Stovall makes three

LSU legend and Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer Jerry Stovall had his jersey (No. 21) retired at during a ceremony at halftime. The former Tigers halfback and West Monroe native, nicknamed “Mr. Everything,” was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1962, a consensus All-American and helped LSU win the 1961 Orange Bowl and 1962 Cotton Bowl. Stovall is only the third LSU player to have his number retired joining the late Billy Cannon (No. 20) and Tommy Casanova (No. 37).

Offensive line solidified?

For the first time this season, LSU had a starting offensive line that was the same lineup as a previous game. The Tigers started Saahdiq Charles, Adrian Magee, Lloyd Cushenberry, Damien Lewis and Austin Deculus who also started the game at Florida last week.

The Tigers had entered the game having had six different starting lineups across the o-line.
