DELCAMBRE — Sophomore fullback Noah Broussard was brilliant last week for Delcambre, which snapped a five-game losing streak with a rousing 56-13 defeat of Ascension Christian on the road.
“Noah had 36 carries for 293 yards,” DHS head coach Marc Broussard said. “I want to say he had three touchdowns with a couple of 2-point conversions.
“Noah runs hard every week. Last Friday, the offensive line was technically sound and very physical. They took it to them from the start of the play to the whistle.”
Broussard wasn’t the only Panther who had a strong outing.
“Parker Nunez had two touchdowns,” Broussard said. “One run and one catch. He had 11 rushes for 97 yards and caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Colt Dooley.
“Our offensive line has gotten better every week. We executed our schemes really well.”
The Panthers halted Ascension Christian’s three-game winning streak.
“Their school dropped out of playing for district honors this year, so they’re playing a full schedule of non-district games,” Broussard said.
“They throw and catch it really well. They gave us multiple looks in the passing game and we had to make things simple. We simplified some things and our coverage, which allowed us to get four or five picks.”
Ascension Christian quarterback Zach Diez was limited to 22-of-46 passing.
“Their passing ability was my big concern coming in,” Broussard said. “But our front four pressured them. Early in the game, they had a 3rd-and-11 with us up, 8-0.
“They converted and I was like, ‘here we go again,’ but after that we got off the field. Our defensive line was led by senior Tylar Curry. He and the other three linemen were incredible. Their quarterback didn’t have time to look down the field because our front four were coming.”
Broussard lauded his secondary, which consists of Nate Picard, Trevyn Guilbeau, Ian Evans and Scott Duhon, all of whom are juniors.
“We’re a much improved team on defense,” Broussard said. “Our attitude and work ethic are great. We only have five seniors on the team and we’re coming along.”
The Panthers (2-5, 0-3) resume district play this week at home vs. Catholic High (6-1, 3-0), which is ranked sixth in the state in Class 2A.
“We’re focused on taking it one game at a time,” Broussard said. “Catholic High is executing at a high level right now. Coach (Brent) Indest is a good friend of mine off the field.
“I have a lot of respect for him and their program.”
