The Westgate High Tigers and New Iberia Senior High Yellow Jackets pulled off district upsets Friday night while Catholic High and St. Martinville continued to roll through the season and Franklin bounced back from its first district loss with a shutout of Jeanerette.
Westgate beat Teurlings for the first time in school history, earning its first district win of the season in the process, with a 42-28 victory. It also marked the first win at home this season for WHS.
New Iberia, meanwhile, continued an incredible streak against Comeaux with an 8-7 win. The Yellow Jackets have won 11 straight against the Spartans and haven’t lost to Comeaux since 2005. The teams did not play in 2011 and 2012 when NISH moved to the Terrebonne/Lafourche based District 7-5A.
Catholic High, meanwhile, scored 60-plus points for the fourth straight game and the fifth overall with a 63-0 shutout of Delcambre in a District 7-2A game, and St. Martinville remained unbeaten with its fifth straight game of at least 40 points, a 40-7 win over District 5-4A rival Opelousas.
Franklin had a huge game from running back Jarius Boyd and an equally big game from its defense in shutting out Jeanerette 42-0 in District 7-2A, a week after suffering its first district loss of the season at the hands of Ascension Episcopal.
In other games involving Teche Area teams, Loreauville fell on the road to Ascension Episcopal 48-12 in a District 7-2A game; Centerville shut out Highland Baptist 47-0 and Hanson fell to Central Catholic 42-0 in a pair of District 7-A contests; and Erath fell at Kaplan 28-14 to snap a two-game District 8-3A win streak by the Bobcats.
Westgate 42, Teurlings 28
Westgate scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to knock off Teurlings Catholic.
Trailing 28-20, the Tigers were able to even the score on an eight-yard run by Tyreese Jackson and a 2-point conversion keeper by quarterback Mar’keyvrick Eddie.
Defensive back Cortez Joseph put the Tigers on top for good with a 64-yard fumble return for a touchdown, and Jackson added a 15-yard scamper to put an exclamation point on Westgate’s historic first victory over the Rebels.
Eddie completed 9-of-15 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns and tacked on 51 yards rushing on seven carries.
Wide receivers Makholven Sonn and Javon Marks hauled in scoring strikes from 72 and 70 yards, respectively.
Jackson gained 101 yards on 17 carries with three scores.
Landon Trosclair ran for three touchdowns and finished with 199 yards on 29 attempts for the Rebels (3-5, 1-2).
Westgate improved to 4-4 (1-2).
New Iberia 8, Comeaux 7
LAFAYETTE — Taegan Bourque’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Markell Linzer in the fourth quarter, followed by Michael Akins’ 2-point conversion pass to Tyson Rivet, was the difference as NISH ended a two-game losing skid with a District 3-5A win over Comeaux Friday.
Comeaux scored on an eight yard run in the second quarter to take the lead. NISH improved to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in district while Comeaux fell to 4-4, 3-2.
NISH plays host to Sulphur Friday.
Catholic High 63, Delcambre 0
DELCAMBRE — Trey Amos scored three times, Peter Leblanc scored twice and the Catholic High Panthers rolled to a District 7-2A win over Delcambre Friday.
The Panthers won due to a stingy defense that held Delcambre in check all night. DHS didn’t cross midfield the entire game and only had a couple of first downs in the contest.
Catholic High (7-1, 4-0) plays host to Ascension Episcopal (7-1, 4-0) Friday with the district title on the line.
Franklin 42, Jeanerette 0
FRANKLIN — Jarius Boyd rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns on senior night and the Hornets limited Jeanerette to negative rushing yards and 6-for-23 passing in shutting out the Tigers.
Boyd surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season early in the second half. He also had a spectacular interception, tipping the ball on a throw into the end zone then diving to make the pick.
That was far from the only big play on defense by the Hornets (4-4 overall, 3-1 district), who unofficially sacked Jeanerette quarterbacks six times for 35 yards in losses with senior Braydon Ward collecting one sack and recovering a fumble.
Boyd’s 22-yard TD run capped a quick four-play scoring drive to open the game and the 2-point conversion by Boyd made it 8-0 with less than two minutes gone. Boyd added a 21-yard TD run in the second quarter to cap the first-half scoring after touchdowns by senior quarterback Zariq Perry and Ward earlier in the period for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Boyd then scored on an eight-yard run and Perry scored from 11 yards away in the fourth quarter. Senior lineman Ejarion Gibson got a 2-point conversion in the second quarter to the delight of his teammates and the Franklin fans.
All of Jeanerette’s offensive success came on big pass plays with Noah Rollins completing 17-yard, 42-yard, 12-yard and 14-yard passes to Te’Darius Weaver. Weaver also had a 20-yard pass completion to Jared Drexler with the Tigers throwing for 106 yards.
Franklin has an open date this week while Jeanerette (2-6, 1-4) plays host to Delcambre in a district game.
St. Martinville 40, Opelousas 7
OPELOUSAS — Travien Benjamin rushed for 221 yards and four touchdowns as St. Martinville Senior High stayed unbeaten on the season with a District 5-4A win over Opelousas High Friday.
Benjamin scored on runs of 10, 65, 35 and 48 yards for the Tigers, who blew open a close game with 27 points in the third quarter. St. Martinville improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in district while OHS fell to 5-3, 1-2.
SMSH travels to Beau Chene Friday.
In other games Friday, it was Ascension Catholic beating Loreauville 48-12; Centerville crushed Highland Baptist 47-0; Kaplan beat Erath 28-14 and Central Catholic beat Hanson 42-0.
