- Westgate’s Javon Marks takes off down the sideline for a 70 yard touchdown catch in the first quarter against Teurlings Catholic Friday as WHS upset the Rebels 42-28 in a key District 4-4A contest.
Westgate took charge with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to sprint past Teurlings Catholic 42-28 at home Friday.
Tyreese Jackson rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and Mar’keyvrick Eddie threw for 197 yards with long scoring passes going to Makholven Sonn and Javon Marks.
Trailing 28-20 early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers tied the game following a seven-yard run by Jackson and a two-point conversion keeper by Eddie, who also rushed for 51 yards on seven attempts.
Teurlings drove into WHS territory on its ensuing possession but a fumble by running back Landon Trosclair was recovered by defensive back Cartez Joseph, who picked up the football and returned it 64 yards to give the Tigers the lead for good.
“I was filling my gaps based on my reads and when my homeboy (Kavin Touriac) made the tackle, I scooped and scored,” Joseph said.
“The play helped change the mood of my team. This was an important win because we made history. We had never beaten Teurlings.”
After Teurlings shanked a punt on its next possession, Westgate clinched the win when Jackson scooted up the middle 15 yards for the game’s final points.
“That’s what we’ve been waiting for all year from Tyreese,” WHS (4-4 overall, 1-2 District 4-4A) head coach Ryan Antoine said. “He helped us control the clock and made runs when we needed it.
“We let him go to therapy during the week and tried to keep him as fresh as possible. He told us he was going to give us everything he had, and that’s exactly what we got out of him.”
Eddie connected on 9-of-15 passes and tossed a 70-yard touchdown to Marks and a 72-yarder to Sonn.
“I was just trying to execute on every play,” Eddie said. “We couldn’t take a play off because Teurlings is a good team. We didn’t throw the ball that much, but we executed when we did.
“It was a big night for me. It was senior night. I was trying to prove that I could do it. I worked all summer so these dudes would have somebody they can depend on, so I just wanted to get the job done.”
Sonn’s touchdown, which came on a fly route along the left sideline, gave Westgate a 20-14 lead with 4:45 remaining in the first half.
“We were discussing the play beforehand,” Sonn said. “Mar’keyvrick was seeing the one-on-one matchup. In one-on-one coverage, 10-out-of-10 times I’m going to come down with the ball.”
Antoine has faith in Eddie to call plays and audibles at his discretion.
“We kind of let Mar’kevyrick call it all night,” Antoine said. “We adjusted when we had to. He sees it and knows the offense.
“Coach (Derek) Landry does a good job of teaching him, as does Coach (Brandon) Harden. We have playmakers, so defenses have to pick their poison.”
WHS punter/kicker Conner Scott helped Westgate stay in position to win the game with a big play on fourth down with the Tigers pinned deep in their own territory in the second half.
“I think Conner Scott is one of the top kickers in the state,” Antoine said. “He’s a big-time soccer guy who puts every kick in the back of the end zone.
“He fumbled the snap on that punt and would have been tackled on the two or three-yard line, but was able to get it off. Two weeks ago, that same thing happened and he tried to run, so it was a good heads-up for him.”
Trosclair led all rushers with 199 yards on 29 rushes and three touchdowns.
Teurlings (3-5, 1-2) was inefficient throwing the ball.
Until a drive late in the fourth quarter, the Rebels were 4-of-14 through the air for 85 yards and an interception.
Sonn and star junior wide receiver Kayshon Boutte spent a considerable amount of time going both ways for the Tigers, who had their best defensive performance in weeks.
Linebacker Keith Lopez had a key sack and numerous tackles.
On offense, Boutte had three catches for 23 yards and five carries for 21 yards.
