Final prep rankings

Catholic High School finished sixth and St. Martinville finished seventh in their respective classifications in the final Louisiana Sports Writers Association high school football polls for the 2018 season.

Catholic High (9-1), which finished the season with a 52-6 win over Franklin, was tied for sixth heading into the final week. The Panthers are the No. 6 seed in the Division III state playoffs and will play host to No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas (5-5) in the first round on Friday. CHS beat STA 63-7 in September.

St. Martinville (10-0) came back to beat district and parish rival Breaux Bridge 30-28 after trailing early, finishing unbeaten in the regular season for the first time since 1996 and for the fourth time in school history. SMSH is the No. 3 seed in the Class 4A playoffs and will play host to No. 30 Franklinton (4-6) in the first round of the playoffs on Friday.

Those were the only two area teams ranked for most of the season, including the final week of the polls.

Several district opponents of Teche Area teams remained among the ranked schools in the final polls conducted by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters from around the state.

Acadiana High (9-1), a District 3-5A rival of New Iberia Senior High, finished sixth in the Class 5A poll. The Wreckin’ Rams are the No. 3 seed in the 5A playoffs and play host to No. 30 Live Oak to open the postseason.

In Class 4A, St. Thomas More (9-1) is ranked fifth in the final poll. The Cougars are the No. 3 seed in the DIvision II playoffs and have a first-round bye. STM is a District 4-4A rival of Westgate High School.

Breaux Bridge (7-3), St. Martinville’s District 5-4A rival, finished with 1 point in the final poll. As the No. 15 seed in the 4A playoffs, BBHS plays host to No. 18 Lutcher in the first round.

In Class 3A, Kaplan (7-3) finished fifth. The Pirates play in District 8-3A alongside Erath High School. Kaplan is the No. 3 seed in the Class 3A playoffs and plays host to No. 30 Jennings at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round.

Ascension Episcopal (8-2), which finished second in District 7-2A behind Catholic High, had 4 points in the final poll. The Blue Gators are the No. 7 seed in Division III and play host to No. 10 Riverside Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lafayette Christian (10-0) finished second in the Class A poll after demolishing Jeanerette 56-0 in the final week. The Knights, who play in District 7-A with area teams Highland Baptist, Hanson Memorial and Centerville, are the No. 4 seed in Division IV and play host to No. 13 Houma Christian at 7 p.m. Friday to open the playoffs.

Vermilion Catholic (9-1) moved back into the poll at No. 10 to finish the season after shutting out Central Catholic 44-0 in the finale. The District 7-A member Eagles are the No. 3 seed in Division IV and play host to Cedar Creek in the first round of the playoffs.

The top teams remained unchanged in all the polls for the final week of the season.

The Class 5A poll was led by John Curtis (10-0), followed by West Monroe (10-0), Catholic of Baton Rouge (9-1), Destrehan (9-1), Zachary (8-2), Acadiana, East Ascension (9-1), John Ehret (9-1), Evangel Christian (6-3) and Terrebonne (9-1), with Evangel and Terrebonne swapping spots as the only change in the Top 10.

The 4A poll also remained unchanged with the exception of the No. 9 and No. 10 teams swapping places. Karr (10-0) is No. 1, followed by Lakeshore (10-0), Northwood (10-0), Warren Easton (7-2), STM, Leesville (10-0), St. Martinville, Neville (7-2), Plaquemine (8-2) and Bastrop (8-2).

In Class 3A, the top eight teams remained the same with St. Charles, tied for ninth, staying No. 9 and De La Salle moving into the rankings at No. 10. University Lab School (10-0) is the unanimous No. 1, followed by Iota (10-0), Sterlington (8-2), Archbishop Hannan (10-0), Kaplan, Union Parish (8-2), Jena (9-1), Eunice (8-2), St. Charles (7-3) and De La Salle (6-3).

Notre Dame (10-0) remains atop the Class 2A poll with the only change for the final week being a break of a tie for sixth between CHS and Newman. Amite (9-1) is second, followed by Country Day (10-0), Dunham (9-0), Many (9-1), CHS, Newman (9-1), Rosepine (10-0), Calvary Baptist (7-3) and St. Helena (8-2). Catholic High finished with 67 points and Newman with 64 in the final poll.

In Class A, Kentwood dropped from No. 5 to No. 7, sparking several changes to the poll. Southern Lab (9-1) remained at No. 1, followed by LCA, Haynesville (10-0 and Oak Grove (10-0). Ascension Catholic (9-1) and Logansport (10-0) each moved up a spot with Kentwood (8-2) falling to seventh. West St. John (7-2) stayed at No. 8 and St. Edmund (9-1) at No. 9 with VC moving in at No. 10.
