New Iberia’s Fusilier, Westgate’s Madison take final honors

The city of New Iberia was well-represented in the final week of the Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs Player of the Week poll on The Daily Iberian’s website, with New Iberia Senior High running back Tyce Fusilier bringing home offensive honors and Westgate linebacker/defensive end Ron Madison taking defensive honors.

Fusilier earned more than half of the total fan vote for Offensive Player of the Week with four other candidates also up for the honor, while Madison beat out Catholic High’s Chris Landry for Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Fusilier rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries as the Yellow Jackets narrowly lost at Sam Houston to close out the season, 28-21. He finished with 56.4 percent of the online vote at www.iberianet.com/sports.

Westgate High quarterback Mar’keyvrick Eddie had 29.8 percent of the fan vote after completing 14 of 18 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-0 win over Northside.

Catholic High running back Trey Henry finished with 8.2 percent of the fan vote after rushing for 143 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries in a 52-6 win over Franklin.

Erath receiver Matt Domingues had 3.1 percent of the vote after a huge week in the Bobcats’ 41-21 win over Abbeville. Domingues had nine catches for 314 yards and five touchdowns.

Loreauville High quarterback Lucas Landry finished with 2.5 percent of the fan vote after his best overall game for the Tigers this season. Coach Terry Martin was effusive in his praise for the senior, who was pressed into duty with an injury to standout starter Zy Alexander, saying Landry did a great job leading the Tigers to a 46-38 win over Delcambre in the season finale. Landry completed six of nine passes for 36 yards with a touchdown, rushed for 52 yards, threw for two 2-point conversions and ran for another, and played his best game defensively as well with several tackles and a big third-down pass break-up.

Madison, who had nine tackles, one tackle for loss and two sacks in the Tigers’ shutout, finished with 82.4 percent of the fan vote.

Chris Landry had eight tackles in Catholic hHigh’s win and finished with 17.6 percent of the vote.

More than 1,000 votes were cast for the week, bringing the season total to more than 18,000 votes cast.
