- Erath’s running back Jax Thibodeaux (5) finds a opening in the line of scrimmage against Lake Charles College Prep defense during LSHAA 3A first round of the playoffs at Ward 3 Stadium in Lake Charles, Louisiana on Friday.
LAKE CHARLES — Erath’s resurgent season ended Friday night as Lake Charles College Prep found a bit of magic late to pull away from the Bobcats in a 28-14 win in a bi-district round game Friday night at Cougar Stadium.
The No. 6 Trailblazers (10-1) advanced to host No. 11 Northwest in a regional-round game next week. Erath, which rebounded from an 0-5 start to reach the postseason, ends the season at 4-7.
Prep quarterback Dillon Simon hit Glynn Johnson deep over the middle of the field for an 81-yard touchdown with 3:44 left to put the Blazers ahead for good at 21-14.
“I kept telling Dillon to stay in the pocket, be patient and put some air under it when he threw the post to Glynn, and we finally hit it,” Prep head coach Erick Franklin said.
“Our defense kept us in the game the whole night. We didn’t think they would be able to throw on us so they became one dimensional.”
Orenthal Lewis added another score on a 16-yard run with 1:21 left to seal the win.
Prep scored twice in the third quarter to knot the score at 14-14, getting TD runs of 34 yards by Orenthal Lewis and 19 yards by D’marcus Miller.
Erath pressured Simon throughout the half, sacking him three times and getting points off the final one when Colton Punch forced a fumble and Tucker Derise returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. Jax Thibodeaux ran in the conversion attempt to give the Bobcats an 8-0 lead.
Erath extended the lead to 14-0 with 1:36 left in the half. Quarterback Luke Leblanc scored on an option keeper from 5 yards out,
capping a 40-yard drive.
The Blazers were held to 29 yards on 14 rushing attempts in the half.
Erath gained 47 yards on the ground, including all 40 on the touchdown drive. Leblanc set up his scoring run with a 15-yard scramble to the Blazers’ 5-yard line. Erath went three-and-out on each of its three
second-half possessions.
“We were playing good defense, we got the scoop and score for six, we did a lot of good things on that side of the ball and played pretty well all around,” Erath head coach Eric Leblanc said of the first half.
“Offensively we made some adjustments and drove down and scored. You have to give them credit. They have a good team, are athletic and well-coached. They got the better of us tonight.”
Erath finished with six sacks. Austin Hebert had two.
Lewis led Prep with 115 yards rushing. Simon threw for 238.
Thibodeaux ran for 57 yards to lead the Bobcats.
“I think it is big when you think about the morale of the kids, especially the underclassmen,” Eric LeBlanc said. “Starting 0-5, then winning four of the last five and getting to this point, an opportunity to upset someone, was nice. I am fortunate enough to have some good kids that have worked for us. I think the seniors have built a foundation for the future of the program. We had a close-knit group. They were together a lot and it showed. They fought to the end tonight and even though it didn’t go our way I am extremely proud of them.”
