Suspect wanted for armed robbery

For years there have been efforts to secure the Iberia Parish Courthouse, and until now those efforts were not realized, according to Iberia Parish President Larry Richard.

“I want to let everyone know that we are close to finalizing the first phase of securing our courthouse. Although the new system will require changes to how we enter the building and what we are allowed to bring in, the end result will be a safer environment for all who utilize our facility. Though I can’t divulge every aspect of the system, I want to brief everyone on the new system and processes that are set to take place,” Richard said.

“We will be placing signage, beginning in parking areas, with information regarding entry points and items that are not allowed into the facility, in the next week or so,” he said.

“There will be a single-entry point for everyone entering the building. This will be the main entrance at the front of the building. There will be a designated entry and procedure to accommodate the needs of individuals with disabilities whose disability does not permit them from entering through the main entrance.

Richard said the system includes the latest technology in video surveillance and detection devices to include metal detectors and X-ray capabilities. Video surveillance covers the entire campus therefore coverage extends to and in some instances beyond the parking areas. Also, he said, all traffic areas within the building are covered.

Additional security personnel have been added to improve safety and security for everyone throughout the facility, he said.

No weapons will be allowed into the facility. No cellular devices will be allowed into the facility. All devices must be left in a visitor’s vehicle and security will not hold them for the visitor.

“This effort is being put forth again to protect everyone who utilizes the facility. We want to provide the services needed by our community and want to do so with safety in mind,” Richard said, then turned to another topic.

“I am also happy to announce that we are moving forward with projects one of which is the Roundabout at Highway (U.S.) 90 and 675,” he said.

“We are meeting within the next couple of weeks with all entities involved in this project. The meeting is a “plan in hand” meeting and is basically the kick off for the project to commence beyond the engineering phase. We should be going out for bid next year with construction commencing shortly afterward.”

Richard said the project is in conjunction with a second project the Acadian Airport Access Road, which together will enhance safety and improve access both to the airport and U.S. 90/ future I 49 corridor.

The infrastructure will help support current businesses and attract future businesses to the airport area, the parish president said.

“By improving our infrastructure we are setting Iberia Parish up for much needed growth and industrial diversity,” he said.
