NIPD makes arrests after traffic stop on Ann St.

New Iberia police officers responded to two bomb threats Thursday afternoon as part of a flurry of spam emails went out worldwide.

According to NIPD Police Chief Todd D’Albor, officers responded to businesses in the 1400 block of Easy Street and the 1100 block of Jane Street after they each received emails saying that a bomb was in the building and would be detonated if they did not pay a ransom.

Similar emails were sent to numerous businesses in Lafayette, including ULL.

Officers secured both New Iberia businesses. No explosives were found.

“It is aparently just a scam,” D’Albor said.

In other areas, some businesses and schools were evacuated while the threat was evaluated. The scammers demanded payment in bitcoin, a digital currency.
