’Tis the season to gift others

 JEANERETTE — When Debra Bouie heard about the problems Ashley LaFont and her family were having for the holiday season, she knew she had to do something. 

It all started when Bouie, a member of Lucinda Pierre Order of Eastern Star Chapter 32, said she heard from Jeanerette High School teacher Stephanie Jones that LaFont was undergoing cancer treatment and was struggling to make ends meet for the holidays.

LaFont has a tumor on her spine that she is hopefully can be surgically corrected in January.

“The thing was it was brought to my attention from one of their teachers at the school and forwarded to the Masons, and they were willing to pitch in and get different items,” Bouie said Thursday afternoon.  

Bouie forwarded the information to the Evergreen Masonic Lodge, which was willing to help with getting presents for LaFont and her two children. 

Between the two organizations, an estimated $400 was raised. 

“We did the best we can after hearing about your situation. We did the best we could. Even though you’re still so far we will take care of you regardless,” Bouie told LaFont during the emotional scene.

Gifts were distributed to LaFont’s two sons, Ramsey and Skylar, who both attend school in Jeanerette.  The gifts included basic food items like cereal and milk, along with other holiday presents.

After a short presentation by the event’s organizers, Lafont  said she was left speechless by the generous donation. 

“Blessed, I’m very much blessed. Thank God,” LaFont said, noting her husband, Ryan LaFont, had his hours trimmed at his place of employment.

“Especially at this time. They cut my husband’s time so bad. I’m beyond blessed. Pretty much speechless.”
