SMSH, NISH, Westgate win tourney openers

ST. MARTINVILLE — St. Martinville, New Iberia and Westgate were first-day winners at the St. Martinville Holiday Shootout Wednesday, with the tournament resuming today at 11 a.m. when Westgate plays Welsh, which had a first-round bye.

On Wednesday, Cecilia beat Franklin 60-53 in the tourney opener, Breaux Bridge beat Jennings 62-36, St. Martinville beat Hamilton Christian 52-51 (a game that was supposed to feature Peabody against Hamilton Christian), Westgate beat Jeanerette 59-53, Tioga beat Patterson 44-39, New Iberia beat J.S. Clark 75-54 and St. Martinville beat Church Point 53-44.

Today, after Westgate plays Welsh in a quarterfinal game, JS Clark plays Jennings at 12:30 p.m., Church Point plays Patterson at 2 p.m. and Franklin plays Hamilton Christian at 3:30 p.m. in the losers’ bracket. In the remaining winners’ bracket quarterfinals, Cecilia plays SMSH at 5 p.m., New Iberia plays Breaux Bridge at 6:30 p.m. and St. Martinville plays Tioga at 8 p.m.

Cecilia 60, Franklin 53

Cecilia outscored Franklin 14-7 in overtime, going 9-for-10 at the line in the extra period, after trailing 28-19 at halftime.

Avontez Ledet had 32 points to lead the Bulldogs, including four 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 free throw effort in OT. Donald Calais had 11 points, going 5-for-6 at the foul line in OT and Lance Williams added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

J’Michael Gray led Franklin with 17 points, including a 10-for-14 effort at the foul line. QyQuan Webber added 11 points.

Breaux Bridge 62, Jennings 36

Seth Alexander scored all 21 of his points in the second half for BBHS, including three 3-pointers

Trevonte Sylvester added 12 points with three 3-pointers. The Tigers led 9-6 after one quarter and 21-12 at halftime, then outscored Jennings 41-24 in the second half.

Troy Ford had 11 points for Jennings.

St. Martinville 52, Hamilton Christian 51

St. Martinville built a 45-30 lead through three quarters and held on in the fourth as Hamilton Christian scored 21 to make it a 1-point game.

Datayvious Gabriel had 12 points and Jayvien Mallery had 11 for SMSH.

Adrian Brown and Michael Thomas scored 13 each for Hamilton Christian.

Westgate 59, Jeanerette 53

Westgate outscored Jeanerette 17-10 in the fourth quarter to rally from a 43-42 deficit for the win.

Keyvie Eddie had a team-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for Westgate. Keydrain Calligan added 12 points.

Taylor Tallmore led Jeanerette with 22 points.

Tioga 44, Patterson 39

Tioga outscored Patterson 15-7 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 32-29 deficit after three quarters.

Tylan Sanders had 14 points and Zeke King and Jerry Moore had 13 each for Tioga.

Elijah Williams led Patterson with 16 points.

New Iberia 75, JS Clark 54

New Iberia led 35-20 at halftime and extended that lead to 64-40 through three periods.

Jaquan Latula had 17 points with five 3-pointers to lead the Yellow Jackets. Jaqualon Lovette added 15 points, Jaquandrick Lovette had 12 and Ralph Johnson added 11.

Shaquay Hunt led JS Clark with 16 points and D’marcus Fugett added 10.

St. Martinville 53, Church Point 44

St. Martinville built a 27-18 halftime lead to win.

Datayvious Gabriel led the Tigers with 15 points.

Davante Marshall had 19 for Church Point.

Yuletide Classic

ABBEVILLE — In the Yuletide Classic at Vermilion Catholic, Lafayette beat Highland Baptist 57-37, Gueydan beat Abbeville 37-16, Kaplan beat Delcambre 48-36, St. Thomas More beat Erath 59-13 and Vermilion Catholic beat North Vermilion 58-30 in girls’ games and Notre Dame beat Marksville 43-40 in overtime in a boys’ game.

In games today involving Teche Area teams, Abbeville plays Erath at 12:30 p.m. and Delcambre plays North Vermilion at 2 p.m. in girls’ games and Fontainebleau plays Erath at 5 p.m. and Vermilion Catholic plays Highland Baptist at 8 p.m. in boys’ games.

Lafayette 57, Highland Baptist 37

Lafayette led 14-12 after one quarter and 25-18 at halftime, then outscored Highland 32-19 in the second half.

Jahniya Brown had 22 points to lead LHS and Halle Plowden added 14.

Jasey Roy led HBCS with 10 points and Marin Barras had 9.

Kaplan 48, Delcambre 36

Kaplan led 26-25 at halftime but held Delcambre to 11 points in the second half while scoring 22 to pull away.

Alyia Broussard had 21 points and Alexis Trahan had 11 to lead Kaplan.

Ali Rae Falgout led Delcambre with 11 points and Tayah Lewis had 10.

STM 59, Erath 13

St. Thomas More led 38-4 at halftime, holding Erath to 2 points in each of the first two periods.

Madison Prejean had 11 points for STM, the only player of 12 who scored for the Lady Cougars to finish in double digits.

Lakelynn Hughes led Erath with 9 points.
