The New Iberia City Council will vote to appoint a replacement City Marshal at tonight’s council meeting.
The appointment comes after former Marshal Vic Delcambre died last week at the age of 84 from multiple organ failure. Delcambre served in the office since 1979.
The council is required to make an appointment within 20 days of a vacancy by state law. The appointed marshal will serve until an election can be called for the position.
In other business, the City Council will vote to enter into a cooperative endeavor agreement with Iberia Parish Communications District to provide a location for the Communications Center in order to perform call taking and fire dispatch operations.
According to the resolution, city government would be giving office space located at 459 E. Main St. and pay $40,000 to the district for a period of one year. In exchange, the district will receive all 911 calls and dispatching for New Iberia’s fire department and provide assistance with New Iberia Police Department calls.
The council also will vote to approve an appointment by Mayor Freddie DeCourt to the New Iberia Board of Adjustments.
If approved, Tommy Granger will serve as an alternate member of the Board of Adjustments. His appointment would last three years, and he would only be called to form a quorum.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at New Iberia City Hall.
