Drainage issues on IPC agenda Wednesday

The Iberia Parish Council will meet Wednesday evening with a slate of capital works projects for approval on its consent agenda.

After years of planning, the council will vote on entering agreements to move forward on a roundabout for the intersection of Airport Road and Jefferson Island Road. It also will vote on allowing a contract to be signed for work on the former Dutch Gosnell building for use as the parish’s new Public Works barn.

In addition, the council will vote on the signing of an agreement to move forward on its S. Lewis Street widening project.

The council also will discuss a resolution to spend $180,000 on flap gates to prevent flooding along a portion of the Commercial Canal and Lewis Street near the Port of Iberia.

In its regular meeting, the council is scheduled to discuss the appointment of a member to the Iberia Parish Medical Center Board of Commissioners. Last month, the council was provided the name of one doctor, Larry Nelson, to be reappointed to the position.

But at least two other physicians also had expressed interest in taking a seat on the board, forcing the council to put off Nelson’s reappointment.

On its its committee hearing agenda for Wednesday night, the council will discuss changes to the IMC board appointment procedure because of the miscommunication over the issue. At its December meeting, District 6 Councilwoman Natalie Broussard added several caveats to a resolution asking for the position to be re-advertised so other eligible members of the IMC staff could apply.

The council also is scheduled to discuss a cell phone policy for the Iberia Parish Courthouse. New security restrictions, including a ban on cell phones for the general public, went into effect last month for the building.

The Iberia Parish Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the council meeting room on the fourth floor of the Iberia Parish Courthouse, 300 Iberia St.
