IPSB to salute top teachers at meeting

The Iberia Parish School Board has scheduled its first meeting of the year today and will elect board officers for 2019.

IPSB President Dana Dugas said the current board formation likely will stay the same for the new year.

“I think we’re going to keep the board the way it is now,” Dugas said Tuesday evening.

The meeting also features  the swearing in of two new IPSB members who were elected to the positions on Nov. 6 election.

In District 4, Raymond “Shoe-Do” Lewis was the winner in November with 55 percent of the vote against incumbent Thomas Jolivet. Lewis, who previously served on the IPSB, resigned after winning a bid for the New Iberia City Council.

Also being sworn in will be Mike Mayeux in District 6. Mayeux, who ran against incumbent Kim Lockett and candidate Sanders Butler, finished with 55 percent of the vote on Nov. 6.

The two seats were the only ones that faced competition during the election. All other School Board members ran unopposed, but Dugas said every member will be sworn in again this evening for the new year.

“Everyone has to get resworn before we vote,” Dugas said.

The board also will vote to call a public meeting for a special election for the renewal of an ad valorem tax at the meeting.

All in all, Dugas said the meeting should be brief and is expected to lay the groundwork for the upcoming year.

The meeting takes place 5:30 p.m. at the School Board administrative office, 1400 Jane St.
