Westgate falls to Carencro in 2OT

CARENCRO — Joe Charles had 29 points and Julian Landor added 24 as Carencro beat Westgate 76-72 in two overtimes in a District 4-4A boys’ basketball game Friday.

In a rematch from the Class 4A semifinals last year, the Bears (15-9, 2-0 district) held off the Tigers (13-7, 1-1) and dropped Westgate into third place in the district.

Despite hitting eight 3-pointers in the contest and outrebounding the Bears, the Tigers couldn’t stop the Carencro inside duo. Carencro also went 31-of-36 from the free throw line.

Westgate returns to action Monday when it plays host to New Iberia and returns to district action Tuesday when it plays host to Teurlings.

St. Martinville 65, Cecilia 50

ST. MARTINVILLE — Jalen Mitchell scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half as St. Martinville won its second straight District 5-4A contest Friday.

Mitchell hit nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and the Tigers outscored Cecilia 38-29 in the second half to pull away for the win to improve to 9-16 overall, 2-0 in district, tied with Breaux Bridge for first place.

Datayvious Gabriel added 15 and Davonte Alexander added 16 for SMSH, which plays host to Opelousas Tuesday.

Avontez Ledet led Cecilia (7-13, 0-1) with 20 points.

ESA 43, Hathaway 41

CADE — Henry Shuffler just missed out on a double-double and Oliver Nickel sank the game-winning basket at the buzzer as ESA beat Hathaway Friday in District 6-B action.

Shuffler finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, Reuben Egan added 10 points and Nickel finished with 9. The Falcons rallied to take the lead in the third quarter and held off a fourth-quarter challenge from the Hornets to improve to 14-9 overall and 1-3 in district.

ESA travel to Midland Tuesday.

Hathaway fell to 17-10 and 2-2.

In other games Friday, Abbeville beat Erath 80-30 in District 8-3A; Jeanerette beat Delcambre 84-56 in District 7-2A; Patterson beat Franklin 53-44 in a non-district game and West St. Mary beat Loreauville 68-39 in District 7-2A.

Girls

In girls action Friday, Sam Houston beat New Iberia Senior High 65-35 in District 3-5A; Carencro beat Westgate 45-25 in District 4-4A; Abbeville beat Erath 48-25 in District 8-3A; Delcambre beat Jeanerette 41-6 in District 7-2A and there was no report from either the Franklin/Academy of the Sacred Heart game nor the West St. Mary/Loreauville contest.
