ESA, CHS battling for No. 1 seed in Div. IV

- Catholic High and ESA are two of the top three soccer teams in Division IV in the latest LHSAA power rankings released Tuesday.
With a little over a week left in the regular season, Catholic High and ESA are battling with Newman for top spot in the Division IV playoffs when the pairings are announced Jan. 30.
When the LHSAA released the latest, unofficial power rankings Tuesday, ESA stood at No. 1 with a ranking of 12.30, Newman was second with 11.74 and CHS was third with 11.44.
Catholic High and ESA are scheduled to play each other Monday and has the potential to affect the power rankings regardless of who won the game. It is also going to determine the Division IV, District 3 championship since both teams are heavily favored to win their remaining games.
The Panthers (12-4-4) have a home game against Wesgate today, at ESA Monday and at North Vermilion Tuesday to end the regular season.
ESA (13-0-2) in addition to CHS Monday, finishes the season at home against Ascension Christian.
Newman (8-3-4) has three games left but closes against defending Divison I champion Jesuit.
In Division I, New Iberia (3-17-0) is 34th in the power rankings and appears to be on the outside looking in when it comes the playoffs this year.
The Jackets have one game left in the season, today at home against St. Martinville.
In Division II, Westgate (9-8-1) is 25th in the power rankings and is less than a half-point from getting into the 24th spot, currently occupied by Haughton (5-9-1).
In addition to CHS today, Westgate has one game left at home against Lafayette Christian Monday.
In Division III, St. Martinville (8-5-5) is eighth in the power rankings and looking to stay there for a first-round bye.
The Tigers have three games left, at NISH today, at Breaux Bridge Saturday and home against Menard Tuesday.
Erath (6-10-3) is 27th in the power rankings with two games left, at Kaplan today and home against Lake Charles College Prep Saturday.
Girls
In Division I, New Iberia (7-10-1) is 29th in the power rankings with two games left in the season, today at St. Martinville and Monday at home against Parkview Baptist.
In Division II, Westgate (4-14-2) is 32nd in the power rankings with two games left, Tuesday at Carencro and Monday, Jan. 28 at home against Lafayette Christian.
In Division III, Erath (12-4-0) is eighth in the power rankings. The Lady Bobcats have finished the regular season and now wait to see where they will fall in the playoffs.
St. Martinville (1-8-0) is 28th in the power rankings.
The Lady Tigers played Tuerlings Wednesday, play at NISH today, play host to Opelousas Saturday and at Abbeville Monday.
In Division IV, ESA (11-4-1) is second in the power rankings with three games left, today at home against Catholic High, Saturday at home against Lafayette Christian and Monday at Barbe.
Catholic High (11-9-1) is ninth in the power rankings with three games left as well. At ESA today, at Academy of the Sacred Heart – Grand Coteau Saturday and at Thibodaux Monday.
Playoff pairings will be announced Tuesday and the first round of playoff games must be played Friday, Feb. 1.
