The New Iberia City Council will consider a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission to rename Shot Street to Velma Lee Lane at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
The decision to rename the street has come with slight controversy after City Councilman Marlon Lewis started the initiative to rename Shot Street last year after the demolition of several shotgun homes on the street.
For Lewis, the renaming was a way to give the street, which has historically had a bad reputation for crime, a positive facelift.
The initial decision was to change the street name to reflect the beautiful oak trees in the area, and the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the street be called Chene Arbre Way, the French translation for Oak tree.
However, during a January City Council meeting local residents packed the council chambers to recommend another name. Family and friends of the late Velma Lee Perrodin, a community volunteer and former Daily Iberian Citizen of the Year who ran a daycare center on the street.
After much discussion, the request was sent back to the New Iberia Planning and Zoning Commission, and the final approval to rename the street to Velma Lee Lane takes place Tuesday.
In other business, the City Council will hold a public hearing and vote to purchase two trucks for the Public Works Department and to appropriate additional funding for the purchase.
The council will also hold a public hearing and vote to pay for the lowest contractor quote to replace the roof on City Hall, pay for exterior painting for the Bayou Teche Museum and to replace a computer for the Section 8 Department.
A presentation of the 2018 audit by Burton, Kolder, Champagne and Slaven LLC. will be heard as well.
The meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
