- Cajuns face Troy in home Sun Belt opener
METAIRIE — Orynn Veillon hit a tying two-run homer and Handsome Monica followed with a solo homer in the eighth inning as Louisiana-Lafayette held of No. 15 LSU 6-5 in the 16th annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Classic on Tuesday night at the Shrine on Airline.
“With the wind blowing out the way it was if a right-handed hitter could get the ball up in the air it could travel,” Cajuns coach Tony Robichaux said. “That’s what happened because those guys got their swings off.”
Hunter Kasuls reached base for the fourth time in as many plate appearances when he singled off of Trent Vietmeier (2-1) to lead off the eighth. One out later Veillon hit his ninth homer of the season well beyond the wall in left field.Monica followed with a homer that nearly reached the same spot as Veillon’s.
“I was definitely taking some daddy hacks,” Veillon said. “I was looking for some fastballs and I missed the first two. Then the count got to 3-2, I got what I was looking for and I sold out.”
The back-to-back homers negated a four-RBI performance by LSU’s Cade Beloso, whose three-run homer and RBI-single helped the Tigers turn a 3-0 deficit into a 5-3 lead.
Beloso, a freshman from John Curtis High School in nearby River Ridge, hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning. His RBI-single brought in the second run of a two-run rally in the fifth.
“We started off hot, then we cooled down,” Veillon said. “Then we got it going again.”
Vietmeier, the last of seven Tigers pitchers, allowed four hits and three runs in the final two innings
“I don’t know why I couldn’t hit my spots tonight,” Vietmeier said. “There’s no reason in the world really why I couldn’t. It was just one of those nights, I suppose.”
Jacob Schultz (1-1) pitched the final four innings for UL, allowing just two hits and striking out four two days after getting a three-inning save against South Alabama.
“He’s got a rubber arm,” Robichaux said. “We wanted to go with a sinkerball pitcher so they wouldn’t hit another one out. He can come back (Friday) and he’ll be fine.”
The Cajuns (20-20) return to Sun Belt Conference play when they visit UT Arlington in the opener of a three-game series on Thursday night.
LSU (24-14) returns to SEC play when it begins a three-game series against Florida on Thursday at Alex Box Stadium.
LSU broke the 3-3 tie by scoring two unearned runs in the fifth. Josh Smith led off by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Hayden Cantrelle. Giovanni DiGiacomo followed with a bunt single and one out later Daniel Cabrera’s smash to first bounced off Monica for an infield single, loading the bases.
Brandt Broussard followed with a sacrifice fly to the warning track and left and Beloso ripped an RBI-single to right.
Todd Peterson retired the Cajuns in order in the first, but Chase Costello relieved to start the second and had control problems. He started the inning by walking Kasuls and Daniel Lahare before Veillon hit an RBI-single and Monica had a sacrifice fly.
Will Ripoll relived the start the third and walked Brennan Breaux leading off. One out later, Kasuls singled Breaux to third and Breaux came home on the back end of a double steal.
“I’m disappointed with the early part of the game,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “We gave them three runs on walks to lead off innings.”
Cajuns starter Logan Savoy held the Tigers scoreless through three innings, then walked Antoine Duplessis to start the fourth. Cabrera followed with a single and one out later Beloso homered off the foul pole in right field to tie the score.
