Three activities kicked off El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia weekend Friday night beginning with a lecture by a special guest, Spanish TV personality and historian José Manuel de Molina. About 60 people gathered at Iberia Performing Arts League’s Essanee Theater to hear his presentation “Historias de la Historia.” Most then took a casual stroll to the Bayou Teche Museum to review the historical exhibits and enjoy a free tour before proceeding to the final stop. At The Sliman other patrons and guests gathered to attend the annual fundraising gala.

Ebrar Reaux, chairman of the Spanish Festival committee, welcomed guests and introduced the board of directors and sponsors of the event. Salwa, a Belgian dancer visiting Acadiana for Festival Internationale, performed a Tribal Fusion bellydance that combined wardrobe and dance moves from India, a little flamenco and gypsy dancing. As attendees dined on food sponsored by Bon Creole Seafood, Cypress Bayou Casino, Fremin’s Foods, Guidry’s Cake Shop, Iberia Medical Center, Jane’s Seafood, Landry’s Seafood & Steakhouse, Preservation Bar & Grill and The St. John Restaurant, Michaela y Fiesta Flamenca dancers and guitarist performed. To conclude the festivities, Dr. Brian Campbell conducted a live auction of signature and unique items and gift baskets collected for the occasion.
