Iberia Community Band President Chuck Guidry said the event was part of the band’s annual Wine and Cheese concert in Loreauville. The hall was filled with enthusiastic concert-goers ready to hear a wide range of music from the band.
“This is our yearly concert; we do it every spring,” Guidry said.
The Iberia Community Band was founded more than 30 years ago by Tony Adkins and Tim Farnsworth. Adkins, still a member of the band, said it was either late 1987 or early 1988 when the first lineup became official.
“I was playing with a band that they put together for the first Festival International, and was driving back and forth with people from Lafayette who wanted me to join their band,” Adkins said. “I started thinking that there had to be people here who wanted to play.”
This year’s concert was dedicated to Paul Schwing, New Iberia’s Mayor of Main Street, at the start of the event. Schwing was an early supporter of the Iberia Community Band, and was known to even let the band practice in his flower shop in downtown New Iberia.
“We started off at NISH, but Mr. Paul would let them play in his shop,” Adkins said.

The song list ranged from Queen to Garth Brooks, with conductor Joel Burt saying the theme of the event was to choose legends from different musical genres. The song list was picked with the Loreauville audience, which has been a big supporter of the band, in mind.
Cory Landry and Ashley Addison served as guest vocalists for the concert.
