Catholic High wins first game in quarterfinal series

BATON ROUGE —Avery Guidry had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run as Catholic High scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open a 3-3 tie and beat Dunham 7-3 Thursday in the opening game of the LHSAA Division III quarterfinal series.

Isaac Thibodeaux also had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in a run for the Panthers and Peter LeBlanc threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win as CHS moved to one win away from the LHSAA State Baseball Tournament next week in Sulphur.

Jacob Poe started for the Panthers and scatterred three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings for Catholic High, which scored a run in the first inning and added two runs runs in the fifth for a 3-0 lead before top-seeded Dunham scored a run in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.

Nicholas Borne had a hits and an RBI and John Cole Broussard had the other hits for CHS in the win.

Stephen Still took the loss for Dunham as he allowed four runs on three hits in 7 1/3 innings. Nicholas Cambias had two hits for the Tigers.

Game 2 is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. with Catholic High as the home team. The if necessary third game will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2 with CHS as the visiting team.

The winner of this series plays the winner of the Notre Dame/Calvary Baptist quarterfinal Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals at McMurray Park in Sulphur.
