The New Iberia Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, with more than 500 vehicles stopped within city limits.

NIPD Capt. John Babin said the checkpoint started at 9 p.m. and ended at 2:30 a.m. The location of the DUI Checkpoint was West St. Peter Street near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard.

Babin said the checkpoint resulted in 502 vehicles stopped, 17 people who were given a standardized field sobriety test, three DUI arrests, three narcotics arrests and 17 drivers who were issued citations.

Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public, according to the NIPD.

The New Iberia Police Department reminds drivers to designate a sober driver for those planning to drink, and if a local resident sees a drunk driver on the road, call 911.
