Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church will be among the modern buildings on a tour of homes Saturday.

Owners of several Mid-Century Modern homes in New Iberia are pleased to be taking part in a self-guided tour of modern homes from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Field Landry, whose home on Old Spanish Trail is one of the homes to be viewed, said he is excited for those participating in the tour to view the unique modern and rustic features of the home, formerly owned by his parents, Al and Elaine Landry.

“We’re excited, we’ve cleaned the place all week and that wasn’t too exciting,” Landry said Thursday evening. “Inside the home you’ll see native cyprus from a 100-year-old sugar plantation mule barn that my dad bought and tore down and we re-nailed it.

“It’s very rustic and contemporary, there’s no paint inside of this house. It’s all cypress and cedarwood. It’s an interesting thing, it reflects on the past but is also contemporary in style. It resembles like no other.”

The tour will highlight the mid-1950s to late ’60s in exterior architecture design. Seven sites — six open homes to tour and as lagniappe, a modern-styled church — are part of the tour, which serves as a fundraiser to support both the LAF and ICRA. The ticket headquarters is the Bayou Teche Museum, and event-goers will get a wristband and map to view the homes Saturday morning upon arrival at the museum.

The Louisiana Architecture Foundation is partnering with the Iberia Cultural Resources Association and the Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau to showcase the homes.

“We think that the ‘Modern Tour Of Homes’ in New Iberia will showcase unique hidden gems from the standpoint of both architecture and interiors,” ICRA President Cathy Indest said. “In addition, if the individual enjoys great food, the VIP Reception featuring ‘Lagniappe Too’ delicacies should not be missed.”

A panel discussion today will kick off the event.

Al Landry, Perry Segura, Herman Gesser and Joel Breaux will discuss will discuss New Iberia modernism from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, with Sarah Young, an assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of Architecture and Design, moderating.

The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by light refreshments.

Other homes on display include the homes of Alfred “Smitty” and Dianne Landry, David Bailey and Jeff Wiess, Patrick and Anne Caffery, Judge Anne Simon, Jeff and Margaret Simon as well as Nativity of our Lady Catholic Church.

Landry, who formerly cooked with his mother at Lagniappe Too, is preparing some Lagniappe Too recipes for the VIP Reception which will be held at Jeff and Margaret Simon’s home after the tour is over.

Tickets online are $30 ($25 for members of LAF and ICRA), day of sales tickets are $35 ($30 for members of LAF/ICRA). Tickets for the tour including VIP reception are $55 ($50 for members of LAF/ICRA).

The VIP reception will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
