The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire that happened early Thursday morning at a grocery store on Mississippi Street.

New Iberia Fire Chief Gordon Copell said the NIFD responded to a fire at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Mississippi Street.

A fire had taken place inside a grocery store across the street from St. Edward subdivision, and had sustained water and heat damage. Copell said the metal structure of the building seemed fine.

Copell said after the investigation into the origins of the fire led to circumstances he deemed suspicious, and subsequently turned the investigation over to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal.
