Economic development resolutions on tap for Iberia Parish Council

The Iberia Parish Council is scheduled to vote on two economic development resolutions at its regular meeting Wednesday night, one for the T-Coon’s Distillery on U.S. 90 in Coteau and a second for Bagwell Energy Services on Twin Port Road in Delcambre.

The T-Coon’s action will provide $16,000 from the parish’s Economic Development District 1 fund to cover the extension of gas lines for the distillery’s facility near Freetown Road and U.S. 90.

The second will set conditions for an industrial tax exemption for Bagwell Energy Services. In his presentation to the council during its committee hearings on July 10, owner Roger Bagwell said his fabrication and service company has operated for decades in Iberia Parish.

“We’ve made $3 million in improvements to our Twin Port facility,” Bagwell said. “We anticipated hiring 100 people and now we are up to 125. We just signed another agreement for another eight acres at the port, so if we get that going it is going to be very beneficial to the community.”

The council is also scheduled to go into executive session again Wednesday night, this time to discuss an ongoing lawsuit over trash pickup at mobile home parks across the parish.

The lawsuit was filed after the parish passed its mobile home ordinance in 2017 which made some mobile home parks commercial establishments, which consequently made those parks responsible for their own garbage and pickup services.

The parish currently charges all residents for trash pickup, so the residents of those parks would be paying the parish government for a service that would not be provided.

The lawsuit was filed by several parish residents living in mobile homes who questioned the legality of the ordinance.

The council will also move to donate one of the older fire engines in Iberia Parish Fire District No. 1 to the city of Jeanerette. The district has declared the equipment as surplus, allowing for the donation. In exchange for the pumper, the Jeanerette department will purchase three sets of bunker gear for the Iberia fire district.

In its public comment portion of the meeting, the council will hear a presentation from Evangelist Donovan Davis, who is organizing a street crusade revival focusing on the voting rights of formerly incarcerated individuals.

The council will also discuss engaging a firm to plan for consolidation of some voting precincts and move others in response to the upcoming 2020 census.

The Iberia Parish council will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the parish council meeting room on the fourth floor of the Iberia Parish Courthouse, 300 Iberia St.
