The Iberia Parish Jail had members of the National Guard come in Tuesday to test all of its inmates after several cases came to light this week.
According to an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, the cases are the first to have turned up in the jail since the pandemic began in March, 2020.
“With the surge of COVID cases in Louisiana, several inmates have tested positive this week,” said IPSO Media Director Katherine Breaux. She also said vaccinations are available for any inmates who wish to have them administered.
Although Breaux would not say how many inmates tested positive, she did say the cases seen in the Iberia Parish Jail have been “comparable to other correctional facilities across the state.”
“The Iberia Parish Jail will continue to follow the guidelines and protocols set out by the Department of Corrections and the Centers for Disease Control,” Breaux said. The health, welfare and safety of the inmates in custody are the highest concern of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.”
