Police in St. Martinville are investigating an exchange of gunfire that occurred near the intersection of Pecan Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard late Friday evening.
The shooting took place just before 11 p.m. According to St. Martinville Police Chief Ricky Martin, the gunfire erupted between two groups of people in cars near the intersection. A bullet grazed one person, but no other injuries were reported, Martin said.
There were no suspects named as of early Saturday morning.
“We have vehicle descriptions and some witnesses to question, so hopefully we come up with something,” Martin said.
The injured person was inside one of the two vehicles, Martin said.
The gun violence in the Pecan Street area has become a public issue in recent weeks. Last month, resident Mary Lewis organized an anti-gun violence rally on the street. Additionally, the St. Martinville City Council discussed the violence there, asking Martin for suggestions on how the spate of shootings could be stopped.
An anti-gun violence rally is scheduled from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. today at the Festival Grounds in St. Martinville.
