A home that suffered a house fire on Santa Ines Street was demolished by the owner.

124 Santa Ines

The rundown

This former home suffered a house fire in July of 2018. Almost three years later during a New Iberia City Council meeting, building inspector Jimmy Landry said little has been done with the building since then.

The issues

Landry said the roof of the building had a large hole in it, which likely invited damage from weather events. Damage from the original fire was also apart of the problems with the structure. Most notably, Councilwoman Brooke Marcotte, whose house the district lies in, said neighbors complained of a family of opossums living in the house. Neighbors were allegedly fearful the creatures would spread to other parts of the neighborhood.

The response

Not all homes put up on the blighted property list get demolished by the city. During an October council meeting where the home on Santa Ines was set to go up for a public hearing, Marcotte requested that the structure be taken off the list.

What’s next?

Today, the property is completely cleared thanks to the property owners dealing with the damaged structure themselves. Marcotte said the neighbors are very happy with the removal.
