Undefeated NSU leads way on All-Southland Conference tennis teams

NATCHITOCHES – After racing through the Southland Conference undefeated, Northwestern State was rewarded on the league’s All-Conference teams released Wednesday.
An SLC-high three Lady Demons were selected on to first-team singles, one on second-team singles and all three doubles pairings made appearances on the honoree list as voted on by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors.
Second-year coach Jonas Brobeck was chosen Coach of the Year as his Lady Demons won their six league matches by a combined 35-7 on top of a 14-4 overall record with a combined seven freshmen and sophomores. It’s NSU’s first SLC Coach of the Year honor since Patric DuBois took the title in 2010.
The middle of NSU’s singles lineup has been the heart, and the Lady Demons placed No. 3 Mariella Minetti, No. 4 Ayu Ishibashi and No. 5 Viktorie Wojcikova on the first team.
All three went 6-0 in league play.
The sophomore Minetti won a pair of three-setters to stay undefeated, topping Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Camille Townsend 12-10 in a super tiebreaker and UNO’s Estelle Vanthier 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
The freshman Ishibashi didn’t drop a set in a conference match, needing just two tiebreakers to keep her clean slate.
Wojcikova, a sophomore is the reigning SLC Player of the Week, also didn’t drop a set in league play, fending off UNO’s Mar Gendra and Nicholls’ Carla Bouygues with tiebreakers.
Minetti and Ishibashi enter the SLC Tournament this week on nine-match singles winning streaks while Wojcikova has won eight in a row.
Freshman Tjasa Klevisar (5-1 SLC) debuts at second team No. 2 singles after finishing the season extremely strong, winning her last four conference matches by a combined score of 48-15.
In doubles, NSU placed a tandem on each the first, second and third teams.
Freshman Rozalie Dohnalova paired with Wojcikova as the only 6-0 pair in the league as they dominated the No. 2 slot.
At the No. 1 slot, Minetti/Klevisar were voted to the second position despite a 4-0 record.
NSU’s No. 3 pairing of Patrycja Polanska/Ishibashi made the third team with a 2-1 record and led in two of the three unfinished matches.
NSU’s seven total selections ties with AMCC for the league best.
The seven total picks ties the program record from 2010, which is also the last time NSU went undefeated in league play (11-0).
