Femtanyl death in Vermilion Parish results in arrest of alleged drug dealer

- Daniel Joseph Duffy III, 31, is charged with second degree murder in the death of Barrett Davidson of Vermilion Parish.
A nine-month investigation into the death of a Vermilion Parish man from fentanyl use has come to a close with an arrest of the man who allegedly sold the drugs.
On Jan. 1, 2022, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division was called out to investigate a report of a suspicious death that took place in the rural Maurice area of Vermilion Parish.

Detectives learned that the victim, Barrett Davidson, purchased illegal narcotics in Lafayette Parish. Davidson did not obtain the illegal narcotics he intended to purchase, instead he was sold illegal narcotics laced with fentanyl.
Davidson later used the drug at his home, and as a result, died.
Through the investigation, detectives were able to positively identify the person who allegedly sold the drug to the victim as 31-year-old Daniel Joseph Duffy III.
On Monday, a grand jury issued an arrest warrant for second-degree murder for Duffy. On Wednesday evening, Duffy was located and arrested on the warrant by the Lafayette Police Department. Duffy is currently awaiting to be transferred to Vermilion Parish for the charge of second-degree murder with a bond of $250,000.
