The New Iberia Garden Club has chosen the gardens of Gill and Brenda Primeaux who reside at 1513 Southwood Drive for the October Garden of the Month award.

The Primeaux manicured beds consist of beautifully sculpted shrubbery – Indian Hawthorns, Hibiscus, Azaleas, ShiShi Camellias and Japonica Camellias. Other colorful flowers include Blue Daze and Lantana attracting butterflies.

Horticultural hint for October planting: Since the much needed cooler temperatures and reduced amounts of rainfall, the flowerbeds are drying out faster. Continue watering on a regular basis as the flowers in your garden tend to wilt quickly. Added compost helps.

The falling leaves of Autumn help preserve the moisture to your beds. Daffodil bulbs along with Sweet Peas, Hollyhocks, and pansy plants can be planted this month. Remember to add bone meal to your bulbs, which is a great source of phosphorus and promotes root growth.

A word of caution: If you have rodents in your area, you may want to substitute a slow release fertilizer instead (rodents tend to sniff out the bone meal and dig up the bulbs).
