TEMPE, AZ – Gharin Stansbury, the 6-foot-6, 245-pound edge rusher from Arizona State University by way of Franklin Senior High School, withdrew his name from the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week.

Stansbury was rated as a three-star edge rusher and the No. 20 prospect in Louisiana by 247Sports during his senior year at FSH, where he starred on both sides of the ball for coach Tremayne Johnson.

“He was the first person in and the last one to leave,” Johnson said of Stansbury’s work ethic. “He’s the type who has a hard-nosed mentality. I think he did everything he could for me as a player and as a student.

“From a defensive standpoint, a lot of opposing teams game-planned around him, which made our job as coaches that much easier. He started at offensive tackle and alternated between defensive end and stand-up linebacker.”

Tulane, Penn State, SMU, Nevada, Indiana, Kansas and Houston were among the 18 college programs that extended a scholarship offer to Stansbury during his prep career, according to 247Sports.

He verbally committed to Arizona State on July 19, 2020, and signed with the Sun Devils over subsequent offers from Texas and Tennessee.

He was listed at 6-foot-5, 220 lbs. as a freshman before bulking up to his current measurables. As a true freshman, he played in eight games and recorded two tackles with a sack for a team that posted an 8-5 record.

ASU head coach Herm Edwards, who recruited Stansbury to Tempe, was fired following Week 3 of the 2022 season. Once Edwards departed, Stansbury played in only two games as the Sun Devils went 3-9 under interim head coach Shaun Aguano.

“I believe Arizona State was a good fit for him,” Johnson said. “He loves it over there. It is a great environment with great people. I went a couple times to watch him play. I believe he gravitated towards coach Herm Edwards.”

Stansbury entered the transfer portal on Dec. 15 before receiving offers from Purdue, Georgia Tech, Indiana and the University of California. He withdrew his name from the portal on Jan. 9 and has three years of eligibility remaining.

On Nov. 27, the Sun Devils hired 32-year-old Kenny Dillingham as its new head coach. Dillingham is an ASU alum who most recently served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Oregon.
