There was no hangover for Catholic High on homecoming.

One week after the Panthers lost the District 8-2A opener at Ascension Episcopal, Catholic High blanked Delcambre 49-0 to cap off homecoming festivities on Friday.

“We didn’t execute very well last week,” coach Matt Desormeaux said. “Give credit where credit is due. Ascension Episcopal played their tails off.

“One of the things we talked about was protecting the football and winning the turnover battle – getting back to doing those types of things. I was happy with the way we responded.”

Quarterback Luke Landry was efficient with his passing, completing 5 of 9 attempts for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Jaiden Mitchell caught two passes for 90 yards with both scores. Connor Segura had a 21-yard TD reception.

Owen Morris and Jake Wyman each completed their only passing attempt. Wyman also had a seven-yard reception and rushed for 10 yards on his only carry. Grayson Varnado (1-8) and Joseph LeBlanc (1-18) had one catch apiece.

Eight Panthers carried the football, led by Marques Austin (6-59, TD), Michael Haik (11-50), Tylan Sonn (3-44, TD), Javon Brown (5-40, TD) and Devin Mouton (10-27). CHS ran for 231 yards on 30 carries and had 20 first downs compared to five for Delcambre. The Panthers were 5 for 8 on third down conversions while DHS was 3 of 12.

“Getting the young guys into the game is huge,” Desormeaux said. “Not necessarily for this year, but for the future of the program. We play a full junior varsity schedule with eight games. That’s huge with building for the future.

“And you never know: if one guy goes down, another will need to step up, so it is huge to get some Friday night reps.”

The Panthers (5-2, 1-1) bottled up Delcambre’s Wing-T offense. DHS (0-7, 0-2) rushed for 92 yards on 41 carries and was 0 of 4 passing with two interceptions. Thomas Beaulieu and J.D. Hidalgo each had an interception. Ian Breaux blocked a punt.

“We had a tough time slowing down Eunice’s Wing-T offense,” Desormeaux said of his team’s 36-33 win over the Bobcats. “We prepared really well, focused on our reads and made improvements on the mistakes we made in the Eunice game.”

One thing fans won’t see from the Panthers, who host Franklin Senior High (3-4, 1-1) on Thursday, is a choreographed celebration after a touchdown or big play.

“I don’t believe that’s part of the game,” Desormeaux said. “I want them to celebrate respectfully with their teammates. Do it the right way, handle success like you’ve been there before.”

Mitchell increased his season totals to 36 catches for 642 yards and eight TDs. The junior entered last week’s game ranked third among Lafayette area receivers. He was only 16 yards behind Dylan Callahan (Iota) and 23 yards behind Comeaux’s Tristan Smith.
