Council to cast final vote on Cleco agreement

The final vote to approve a 27-year deal between Cleco and the City of New Iberia will be up for approval at Tuesday’s New Iberia City Council meeting.
The vote comes after more than a year of discussions between the council and Cleco representatives several years before the current franchise agreement is up for renewal. After approving a tentative deal earlier this year, the agreement was vetoed by Mayor Freddie DeCourt after certain provisions asked for by council members did not manifest in the proposed contract.
Since then, DeCourt’s administration has chosen a more private negotiating strategy that culminated in the agreement that comes to the council Tuesday. Legal counsel Jeff Simon said earlier this month that the proposed contract would likely be the last chance for a franchise renewal before the utility company simply waits until the expiration of the current contract.
In other business, the council will vote to approve a site plan recommendation by Planning and Zoning to demolish the Voorhies Supply building located at 401 W. St. Peter St. The building, which has remained vacant following the closure of Voorhies Supply, will be demolished in order to construct a Dollar General in the area if approved by the council.
The meeting takes place 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Iberia City Hall.
