Deana is a 3 ½-year-old boxer mix, and she’s the longest standing resident at the Iberia Parish Animal Control, having been there since June 1. According to Shelter Director Erica Capak, Deana is one of the shelter staff’s favorites because of her gentle disposition. She doesn’t pull when on leash.
Her clipped tail never stops wagging as she greets everybody in the room with love. When they rescued her from Tupelo Street, she weighed 40 pounds, but now she weighs a healthy 63 pounds. Despite her size, she loves cuddling on laps. Her only real medical problem is heartworms, which Capak said is relatively simple to treat.
Deana goes to all of the shelter’s promotional adoption events, and Capak said she isn’t sure why she hasn’t been adopted yet. As a gentle, yet playful dog, she would make a good companion for most families.
“She would make an awesome couch potato. She would be good with kids coming home from school and wanting to play. She would be good for any home,” Capak said.
Anyone interested in adopting Deana can go to the shelter Monday- Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adoptions are free, but all animals must be spayed or neutered and must have a microchip. Those fees are $80 for dogs and $50 for cats.
