The Grinch with his favorite friend (or foe) Santa. Bret Lang has been dressing up as the green machine for the last few years. His goal is to help spread holiday cheer.

Whoville’s favorite villain is making his way to New Iberia this week.

Dr. Seuss’ the Grinch is inviting you and your family to come to the courtyard of The Daily Iberian on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 5 to 9 p.m. during the annual New Iberia Downtown Christmas parade for a photo with everyone’s favorite green creature.

During the event, you can take a photo with the Grinch. If you would prefer a family photo instead, you can take one in front of a backdrop of a red pickup truck and Christmas trees.

The man behind the green scowl, Brett Lang, has been “The Mean One” for three years now. He said this time of year can be hard for some, so he is helping families get Christmas pictures while also making fun memories. What’s even better? Seeing the Grinch in person.

“Everybody loves the Grinch,” Lang said. “I have had the costume from when I did it several years ago.”

The Grinch is popular among the little ones because it’s different from Santa, Lang said. The Grinch is a great representation of Christmas. His transformation stands as a powerful symbol of the spirit of the season.

Some kids, according to Lang, enjoy seeing the Grinch, while others tend to not get too close but it’s all fun for everyone involved.

For as long as he has done this, Lang said he enjoys seeing the kids and their reactions when he is in costume. Being able to put a smile (or terror) on a child’s face, is something that Lang loves about this time of the year.

“Seeing the kid’s expression and their reaction, and doing something for the community,” Lang said.

The Grinch became popular with Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The story depicts a green cat-like creature who had a heart “two sizes too small.” He is annoyed by the Christmas spirit that surrounded him.

He eventually attempts to steal Christmas from his local town before overcoming it with love and Christmas spirit.
